The last show of three just aired the first was shot 16mm, the second 35mm 2 perf and this one on Red. Must say this one looked well poor, terrible flares and artefacts and whilst the style was similar to one & two it did not hold up not a great advertisement for Red.

I agree...this was a bleak and very depressing drama but I stuck with it to check out the Red footage and it did not impress. Main thing that struck me was how soft it looked. The BBC series Wallander was stunning in comparison and really showcased the Red.

I have yet to see this series but it looks interesting...as in dark and moody. But as to the quality of the picture I don't think just because someone shoots on Red it will make their picture sharper or look better. I've seen stuff projected over at WB that was shot on the Red and it looked horrible. Almost like they were trying to make it look bad. I suspect that it was a DP that was use to shooting film or something because the highlights were really blown out.

But on the flip-side I have seen amazing images come out of the camera. There are just many steps along the way were the footage can go south if people don't know what they are doing.

I was going to post about the images, saying that they weren't the best in places. Then I thought better of it. I suspect that a lot of it was an artistic choice, trying to make it feel like 1983.

I thought it was a mixed bag as far as the images were concerned. Some were stunning,I really didn't like the flares. However I must say that the grading was superb and really captured that bleak light that one often sees in northern England.
Showcase for Red,hmmm,Red's just a camera capable of great versatility, perhaps not always used to it's best advantage in tonight's film, but I think the artistic choices, while not always successful were interesting.
Tom.

I think its worth saying that Red Riding was a fantastic story; not easy to watch but fascinating viewing. After all, for all of the chatter about the cinematography on here, when people talk about the piece in the papers or at the watercooler tomorrow, they won't be commenting about the highlights being blown in one scene, on there being too little detail in the shadows; they will talk about the story told.

Of course, the filmaking (the science) is essential to convey the story in a visual medium, but cinematography (the art) only enchances an already good story. While a version shot on s8mm may not be as enjoyable, the core of the story survives. No amount of Cooke S4's and RED's can rescue a bad script or idea. Generally speaking.

Sorry for posting, what, on reflection may be a statement of the bleeding obvious.

Just as a note the DP David Higgs shot it on his own 2 Red cameras (and he has had a lot of experience with them). He also DP'd the UK's first Red Feature Lesbian Vampire Killers which is in cinemas here from friday.

The first 2 episodes are here http://redriding.channel4.com/ and I suspect the third will be up shortly. It's PC only though if you want to watch online....

LVK was shot on Red? Even more reason to see it ;).

There is a very exciting bit of TV coming up that was shot on Red in the UK. I'm not entirely sure if we are allowed to talk about it or not. I think it sthe secret project that the redcentre project have been hinting at.

it's my cameras and i was DIT. it very cool lots fx's will talk more in april but i still feel it's a project that took advantage of the RED's strong post and great greenscreen rather than it's cinematic brilliants...UK drama needs to be approached differently to really start taking advantage of the RED. i Really hope that some production company will come along in the UK and approach it in the same way as it's done in the US, This is not just a budget thing. Its about not pushing the actors into a postion so they playing a scene 1 feet away from a wall and being happy to use backlight and letting big areas of the screen go to black. This way of approach scene is normal to alot of us but always seems alien to uk drama.

But saying that "the secret project" was very cool and honor to be involved some of the best crew i've worked for and a amazing achievement based on the time and budget
