Hi,

I'm sure this is something that has been covered comprehensively, but I haven't been able to find anything in my searches so if there is a thread on it elsewhere, please let me know.

I'm just wondering what the exact system is for the naming and directory structure of Red RAW data.

At the very start of a clip filename, does -- SHOULD -- 'A' denote the Roll number?

ie. The second clip in ROLL01 should be A001_C002_date_001.R3D;
in ROLL04 it should be A004..... etc?

The reason I ask is I have sixteen Rolls that I'm currently processing through RedCine and placing into an identical directory structure (with the intention of some sort of conform at the end, hopefully in a Scratch suite, budget permitting...).

I've noticed that whilst all the 'C' values are correct, the 'A' values seem to be all over the place, with about half the Rolls' clips starting with A001 and the other half with other values that with a few exceptions don't correspond to the Roll number. eg. all clips in ROLL04 start A001; all clips in ROLL08 start A005 etc. etc.

Whilst I try to find an answer for this question, I'm adding the suffix of 'ROLLxx' to each clip and relevant directory, so a) I don't get any clips with the same filename (which is already the case with the original RAW data) and b) I know which Roll each clip comes from, to clear up any confusion in the conform stage.

If I am correct in my assumptions, should I just manually correct all the folders and filenames in the RAW data (and corresponding exports which I'm using for the offline) to read the correct values? Or is this a big no no? Should I just keep the 'ROLLxx' suffix system and deal with this at the conform stage?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The first letter is the Camera ID as set by the operator. The three digits immediately after are the Reel number, then C for clip and the clip number, then the shooting day in YYMMDD.

As long as you don't have any overlap in reel numbers for a given shooting day you won't need to worry. If you do, then someone was incorrectly operating the camera.

!!

I DO have an overlap, lots of overlap, about half the Rolls start 'A001' and they all have the same date.... What should I do? I've just finished exporting everything thru RedCine (major problems trying to go through FCP, proxies and log&transfer...) and need to start cutting asap. Should I manually change each reel value on the raw data?

EDIT/UPDATE: Cail has very kindly helped me out with answering this question so consider the thread closed (unless someone else has something to add).
