RED Ranch Zoning Approved

And to clear things up, my post (which in one way, started the whole thing) was mearly a jest at the trying to crop up a new "hollywood" in massachusetts

So who wants to go in on a big rental house in Vegas this Fall/Winter, maybe something near Red Ranch, with a nice swimming pool and 3-car garage? I'll probably only be there a couple months out of the year, so I might need some roomies.

I go a couple times a year to play poker mainly, and I keep hearing from this realtor that I've kind of befriended that it's a great time to BUY in Vegas right now. Obviously it's a nationwide thing right now, but Vegas in particular has fire-sale prices on just the kinds of houses you're referring to.

RED Ranch is not designed to replace Hollywood, Bollywood or any other place.

When I lived in Hollywood in the early 80's it was hoppin'. There was something going on there all the time. I'd run into Joe Dante or Michael McKean every few days at Hollywood Book and Poster where they were perusing scripts and buying comics. There was always some cheap film shooting on location around town. There was a TON of work to be had because of all the production going on and the town generally had a feeling that there was something going on all around you all the time. On any given night there were literally hundreds of bands playing around town. The "after hours" life was as hoppin' as the rest of the town.

That Hollywood hasn't existed in a long time. The cost of working in California eventually reduced it to the place where they shoot The Tonight Show and some television series. Vegas has felt more like Hollywood than Hollywood for a long time. If you add a Walk of Fame and someplace to stage big premieres like Mann's you're all set.

Your realtor friend sells real estate... so when is he/she going to tell you that it's a great time to sell? ;)

There's still some really silly stuff going on in the real estate markets. You can get 3% downpayment loans via the FHA. And because these loans are insured by the US government, loan originators can flip the loans for an immediate profit, and the buyers of these loans will make money because the loans are insured by the government.
But the real problem is that job losses are rising (e.g. you know there are job losses in the real estate and financial markets), which means more foreclosures, more supply of housing, and lower prices. But do your own homework... and not people trying to sell you some real estate, or some schmuck on the Internet. ;)

Or stick to poker... the rake is less than the real estate flipping casino. Few people make money in either, but you'll likely lose less in poker. :D

A very good point. But I should have added that I've known him for 7 years and he's never once tried to sell me anything, including now. It was just something he mentioned in passing.

And you're right about poker, it's amazing that the games are still so good in Vegas, even in the mid-high limits. Especially considering that the online games aren't the ATM's they used to be.

Real Estate prices still have a long way to go down. We ain't even near the real bottom yet. Next summer, I think prices will be really low.

Hi Jim,

little question: do you with the RED Ranch want to provide for services and locations, like for example The Skywalker Ranch, or do you also want RED to be in any way involved in the (artistic) production of some movies?

I think not, but it can't hurt to ask, right ;-) ?

Thanks and best regards, looking forward to see it finished!

"Olivet said he expects the Red campus, when completed, to create 1,000 to 2,000 jobs, many of them direct Red employees and other “immediate partners.” "

Jim,

When are you accepting applications? I think I'd make a great Bomb Squad team member :)

Right on the money there Tom. People think its bad now just wait.

I might have to look into getting a place near the Ranch when the housing market is towards the bottom. But I'm pretty happy with my 367 acres up near Redding.

Just found an article about the RED ranch getting zoning changes and waivers approved by Clark County today. Has some interesting info about the ranch too.

This is pretty awesome. I wish they would do something more like this on our Indian Reservations. At the Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California , we spoke about it indepth, but at the time (before Tribal Casinos) there was no funding to do it. Now we realize that tribes should help tribes. And Nevada always is Entertainment-friendly. So now in Nevada (tribes or not) there is a place which can be used.
