Lori is a Focus Puller and camera assistant from Toronto who has worked in the film industry for over 20 years and she also makes custom leather products and raincovers for film production. She receives feedback from many camera assistants that she incorporates their needs into the future designs of the rain covers and ditty bags.

I recently had her make me a rain cover for my RED Scarlet-W. These photos below are of this 1st prototype, but the new finished Red camera raincover will be available next week for ordering. This first template for the RED DSMC2 that allows Lori to make anyone a RED rain cover without sending in their camera, as I had to do. The new high tech polymer raincovers are available to order next week. Her rain covers are WAY WAY better than any portabrace polar cover. Lori Longstaff’s Carrot Top Productions www.cameraraincovers.com (website is coming soon) “polymer360 " won't crack.

Construction is combination of Nylon Cordura, Neoprene and Lori Longstaff's exclusive clear Polymer with the most unique properties. The Polymer is touch screen sensitive, super thin and strong and won't crack minus 45 degrees. The polymer is so clear, it is almost optically clear! When using sections of the polymer to cover electronics, the heat can dissipate. Special note: there are some good camera assistant camera ditty bags on the market, but after a year of going outside during the winter months the plastic bags located on the lid crack. These covers won’t crack.

She’s been doing this for many years, but not many people know about her.

This is my custom build for my camera that has a GPU left side handle and a RED DSMC2 right handle. I wanted air intakes for the top fans, so there’s a mesh under a half moon cover that allows air intake for the top fans. Mesh on the front for the scratch mics, and in my case, neoprene slits that allow attachment of the GPU handle and a shotgun mic. The neoprene cover for the right handle makes it really easy to use the side handle and the clear polymer top not only allows easily visibility of the RED touchscreen, but it’s also will pass through touch to the screen. The zippers are water proof as well.

Amazing hand made quality work.

Lori has a standard RED DSMC2 template for a typical build that fits a touchscreen monitor, the DSMC-2 V-lock expander, and large 150 Watt-hour batteries. Pricing is $700 CDN plus shipping to Canada and the US. $100 extra for the DSMC2 handle cover.

You can order the RED raincover by contacting Lori via email at llong@rogers.com or (416) 452-9247.

She’s also currently making sync slate raincovers and a newly designed on set ditty bag.

From Lori:

“This Prototype rain cover is has been modified to take various lenses, and custom accessories. The latest RED camera rain cover is designed to easy access, 100% waterproof zippers and my touchscreen sensitive polymer that is optically class, thin and super strong. Just funded the design and manufacturing of the Panasonic Varicam. Steadicam is next on my agenda.”

Hm. Ever since my scarlet purchase I am a little bit worried about the top fans. Like... They are intake fans, and they are right on the top of the camera, completely open to all kinds of things, you can even see the insides of the camera  What if a tiny random drop of rain will fall right in there? I feel like using this cover daily just to be safe lol

Hey Dmitry,

You think you can see inside of your camera, but all you are seeing is the cooling system. The rest of the internal components are sealed from the outside world, so fear no more...

Man, I wish I'd seen this last week. Ordered the one from Wooden Camera but it's not a great fit for DSMC2 bodies. Does she make different size lens cutouts? I mostly use Contax, Canon and TLS rehoused Cooke lenses.

I was worried about the same thing. What you are saying is that if it do manage to get caught in the rain you would have time to get the camera out of the rain? I'm new to Red and would like to keep "Lola" safe.

Just food for thought I never figured out why they made the RED cameras with an intake on the top of the camera. Seems to me that if the camera took air in the underside and vented it out the top even if it was lightly raining it would create kind of a pressure bubble over the camera sending water other places than sucking it in to or on to the top of the camera.
Anyway enough rant.. I have tried for years many different rain covers and I end up going back to the same thing... A shower curtain draped over the camera and cut or modified if needed to move around. You can buy a lot of clear shower curtains for $700 bucks... Just saying. Never been very happy with probably over a dozen rain covers now. Even the Protabrace on a regular shaped beta cam form never seems to work very well. I wish someone would come up with something that worked...

Just don't leave it in the weather for long, but a few drops in the cooling vent shouldn't do any harm.

God, it seems like all out there is pretty average. I listened to Lori and recon she's got along way to go before they have something worthy that suits the Red Weapon when spending $700. I mean looking at that Vimeo edit on there prototype, where's EVF cover? and the handle is too getting soaked (which is on the left) - you only have to see her website and see that its still under construction tells me enough. So i go to the B&H Photo site and what they have for RED is a PortaBRACE - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod..._brace_rs_epic_a_custom_waterproof_cover.html
Well thats for a EPIC? not a Weapon but I suppose that's the same - so I suppose I'll pick the Camrade https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/866927-REG/camRade_ws_red_epic_WetSuit_for_the_Red.html
which looks good enough for dealing with lots of salt spray in the surf which is my reason for needing it. I just wish I could go to the shop and try them out first.
This is where i shoot.

Lori's work is top notch but she makes these custom one at a time. Many here in toronto have her covers.

Raincover

This thread has stalled somewhat but I wanted to add a suggestion to the mix.

I have also been looking for months to get a decent rain cover, I came across Lori's vimeo offering and looks intriguing but the website is dead. I film wildlife and to the best of my knowledge animals come out in all weathers and it surprises me that there isn't something better out there. Shooting with different lenses, often long lenses, Sigma 50-500, Canon 50-1000, I needed a rain cover to accommodate them.

I found a seamstress who deals with mostly boat upholstery, so was well adept at dealing with a little bag. She was willing to take the challenge on. Version 1.0 seems to be holding up. There are rooms for improvement, and some adjustments for size etc but so far so good.

I bought canoe sacks (watertight clear bags) from MEC (REI in US) for cheap and had them cut up and added velcro etc to make it work. A rain/snow proof bag that is clear (easy to see all the controls) and pliable (didn't go stiff at -25C). The monitor hood in an independent hood that has a couple of fishing weights to keep it seated. The reason for the separate hood was to allow the monitor to be moved about without being restricted by the rest of the rain cover. Velcro contests to the shade to hold everything in place. Anyway, just thought I'd throw this out there for anyone wanted to take on a little DIY

Happy to hear your thoughts or suggestions on improvements.

Good job, Darren.
It looks solid. And not having a plastic in front of the display makes easier to to see it (although, maybe, less protected when is windy)
I'll buy one.

And coming from Vancouver, I'm sure you're an expert in "Rain" ;)
