  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED RAID DRIVE technical specification

totally agree the only problem is when in carrying the drive from the camera the person trips over and the drive slips out their hand and ends up on the floor :(

Happens more than people want to admit too... I had a RED RAM get dropped into a swimming pool. The camera and the two operating it were in the pool with the camera on a raft or float of some sort. Just a couple feet from the side but they didn't want to risk a hand-off of the media to someone there at the side of the pool. They had someone take the media from the camera and walk about 8 feet over to the steps to climb out, he dropped it. WTF? Who knows, I actually wasn't there to see it.

I quit shooting RED-DRIVES a long while back for a few different reasons. I did have one just die on me, but not during any real shooting, so nothing lost. Saw a few get dropped... I just figured I'd stick with CF cards and a couple RED-RAMs. I'm all REDMAG SSD cards now... And I highly recommend them. The SSD's are cheaper per GB than the 16GB RED CF cards, even better when bought in a 4-pack. The only down-side is the initial investment to get going with the $1500 SSD module and the media still isn't "cheap" for many small production boutiques and owner/ops.

An update - the data recovery people say that one of the disks was OK but the second one was broken and it has been sent to the clean room for more TLC.

Well the data came back this morning.

Looking quickly in REDcine-X it seemed OK but as we went through the video frame by frame we realised there were:

a) a few belmishes (partial errors on frames)
b) a few places where while reading the file REDCine-X crashed
c) an inability to transcode to a quicktime file for editing on FCP (the files came out blank)

We tried using the REDUnDead tool but that if anything made things worse cutting out the frames that had partial errors on them rather than making the files read smoothly by rebuilding the obviously damaged structure.

Soes anyone have any suggestions or ideas from a data perspective.

I suspect that our editor can cut together enough from the bits we have got back but any tips on any of the above would be appreciated.

Regards
Alan
