  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Projector...

It's funny that you should say that, Tim, I was about to ask if Jim had access to Area 51. I'm beginning to suspect that Jim is an alien. ( :

This is great news I am looking forward to the "play at home" version

I can only hope that RED is also thinking about convincing all the major Hollywood studios to release movies in 4K (on DVD discs? USB sticks?) to provide for nice content to see in 4K on a home REDRAY and 4K projector.

I believe the plan is that your RED RAY box has an Internet connection and you download the movies you buy. No physical media required.

BTW... it is passive 3D. Active 3D just landed in the La Brea tar pits.

Jim

Love.

I have deep and abiding Love for you people at Red.

I know we've argued about 4K in the home ... but you have no idea how happy this makes me, and how much I'm hoping to be wrong.

And there you go making me wrong ...

I am eager to hear pricing and availability. I only have 1080p Plasma in my studio today ... and I want this to be the next step for me so so badly. This is actually more important to me than owning an Epic, which was my prior #1 priority.

Should i need to worry about the lamp life each time when i play movies on it? or is it like 30000 hours LED projector?

Will it be DCI compliant? This will be important to studios and cinemas.

Nothing to worry about there. They already said a while back that everything would be compliant and fully compatible with existing DCI standards and systems when it came to RED Ray and the FLBP (Frickin Laser Beam Projector) because they are trying to do the same thing they did with the cameras and open up digital cinema to all price-points and markets from small indie folk to Mr. Big cinema owners.

Theater and home. Sooner rather than later.

Jim

Didn't you say something about things being quiet for a while???? Seriously... Nov 3rd, now this...

Home version.... HOME VERSION....

Lens options available from RED? 2:1, Anamorphic, etc.

sigh.... im so happy.

So now all that remains is to strap it to the shark's head, and we're ready to go!

(these are assuming Red is using a scanning laser approach)

In my mind there are 2 HUGE benifits to a laser projector, or at least the ones I've worked with.

1) No lens, and almost infinite focus.

2) Probably the most important thing and the real differentiator, and the thing that makes them look most like a cibachrome. THEY DO NOT PROJECT BLACK!, every other projector technology works by emitting 100% brightness uniformly and then either blocking or not reflecting the black parts of the image. Tack on the loss of contrast from passing the light through a lens and all of a sudden your blacks are really just grey. I can't stress enough how big of a deal this is. Scanning laser projectors just turn off for the black part of the image creating amazing contrast and fidelity.

There is no 'generic' laser projector scheme. There are scanning designs, and there are systems which use Laser light sources in combination with more or less standard DLP technology including lenses, and there are hybrid systems with scanning AND light modulators.

Kodaks DLP based Laserprojector design is more or less ready to market.

I would really like to know which road RED took here.

Good Afternoon Jim.
A quick question:
What kind of screen will be needed for the Red Laser Projector? A silver screen similar to the ones used for realD?
Thank you.

Yeah, this is why the prospect of a laser projector is so exciting. It seems like it takes the best feature of plasma TVs (true blacks) and all of the great things about projectors and combines the two.

"

It was so clean and so vibrant the only thing I can compare it to is Cibachrome. That's it, a giant moving Cibachrome!"

Jim

Holy f*ck (not to offend anyone)..count us in!.

This is EXACTLY WHAT IS NEEDED FOR S-3d.

I have always felt in my "bones" that RED has stuff to offer that is really going to be important (to us) way beyond (just) incredible cinematic capture technology.

Today for the first time I am convinced of a REAL bigger picture for the future and it IS going to be RED.

Now (for the first time) I REALLY feel that (big time).

Awsome.

Now the final challenge for home use is to figure out how to do front projection in a lit room.

EDIT: Looks like there are a few plausible options such as

DNP and Black Diamond screens. If this projector is super bright and is only needed in a small space (say home theater/screening room) I bet you could probably go with like a 0.5 gain screen and get some pretty good black levels. Anyone have any experience with rooms that aren't blacked out?
