  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Projector...

And I'm hoping for a 4K version of Road to Perdition, just for the rain scene alone! And maybe a 4K Seven Samurai, and Baraka, and...

Hey, why not a 7k addition of the original black and white Steam Boat Mickey (mouse) ;) .

Theater and home. Sooner rather than later.

Jim

Jim... what about a player? I know you have it on the road map but I was thinking if it is possible to actually editing systems and encoding programs have the R3D encoder to how knows we use with the Red Player...

could be a reality?

Won't happen as with practically all other films with a 2K DI. Too expensive to rescan and redo post production. And the difference between 2K and 4K with 35mm is rather small anyway.

Of course it won't happen with many films. But I think you underestimate the number of films that have been or are being re-mastered at 4K for preservation and future distribution. Unfortunately most of the films that are missing out on this are those produced recently, within the last decade, where DI's were 2K, most FX were at 2K, some cases less. It's too involved / expensive to re-master at 4K and re-do all the post work, FX / CG, etc..

if the studios want us to buy these movies again on another format its going to take a lot more for me to buy everything I've just bought in 1080p. upgraded effects couldn't hurt. I think its sometimes interesting to go back and improve on the effects work of older movies. have both versions via seemless branching and can we please can at least 10bit video as a standard for home viewing.

I'd love a projector that auto calibrated , auto focused , autozoomed for the screen you are using. light sensors should be cheap enough for this to happen already. QA at theaters is really bad. its always playing partly on the curtains. out of focus and not bright enough

I believe Panavision has already made that...

A friend of mine worked on the Panavision system. Its pretty awesome or would have been. Because of cost, they opted to use the Dolby glasses. The original glasses produced better results, but they were even more expensive than the Dolby glasses, which are a lot more expensive than the RealD glasses.

KODAK laser & IMAX

KODAK laser & IMAX

Jim, if the RED laser is part of November 3rd, it can't come fast enough.

Studio Daily just published an article with this headline:

Kodak Laser-Projection Technology Is an IMAX Exclusive
Newly Redesigned Projectors Will Brighten Up Super-Large Screens, Especially for 3D

Here is the link: http://www.studiodaily.com/main/news/headlines/13495.html

I have no doubt RED will be far more agile than Kodak - they (IMAX & Kodak) are looking at a late 2013 deployment.

Should be enjoying watching my own RED laser projector being fed by a REDRAY well before then.

Never-the-less, this industry is advancing at breakneck speed.
Wow

I saw something on it a few years ago, where they had unqualified people run in and run the next movie, which is then left unsupervised.

More energy efficient laser DMD projector design.

They said that is uses the conventional imagers used in present projectors, maybe they are waiting for a 8k version.

The way digital mirrors devices work is a bit inefficient. The mirrors often have to throw away a lot of light, and I wonder how much abbreviations they make that gas ti be filtered out.

A part solution for the mirrors is to adjust output to the current frame's maximum onscreen brightness of the target color (primary color ussually) for the longest flick on. Now all lower brightness levels for the target color use longer flicks instead of ticking away more of the light, allowing the target color beam to be turned down. That should save heaps of power, depending on how dull the screen us.

Of course if you can't turn the beam power down easily, you can reduce its on time pulse to around the maxinum conventional flick on time for the target color in the frame. If you can't do that you can divert the beam for the off period to an energy reclaiming/saving system. If you can't do that there must be something wrong.

Quick Jim, off to the manufacturer for a firmware update ;)

For aberrations from mirror edges, diocohtic filtering of frequency to the frequency used. Plus other advanced solutions I am not covering.

Redray Projector Nov 3rd? And Corgie Cam.

Redray Projector Nov 3rd? And Corgie Cam.

Jim, if the RED laser is part of November 3rd, it can't come fast enough.

My post went missing.

Jim did say that this was going to be Red's biggest day, which means a major upgrade on the Scarlet/Epic-S axis, or the projector and/or Red Ray aswell (preferably in the projector too) (if only it was 8k aswell, which may count out Dmd use).

Lets look at the time line, interfaces: Display Port will do 4k well, there is rumored faster version of Thuderbolt IO interface built on display Port. Apple and Jim have been close. Apple is said to be introducing laser projector with 3d screen. Redray has yet to be released, and likely waiting for cheaper hardware to play it. AMD has cheap general purpose gpu supporting processing chips. But Intel is just going to upgrade theirs, maybe early December, I think originally earlier but delayed. Apple is waiting to upgrade their Mac Pro lineup and likely on release of the new Intel's and be able to encode Redray easily. Apple is known to preannounce products, and are giving extra holidays late next month I think, maybe a break before or after a high work load period). So it I'd possible that they will preannounce Mac Pro around early November with Laser and Red ray compatibility (or early December). So, how close am I?

I forgot, in the Spirit of my Area 51 posts: The Queen of England is also coming to Australia, leaving her free from her Australian visit on Nov 3rd, where she can buy a Scarlet and corgey harness in person, to secretly film her secret service entourage to see if they work for the one world government, using a Red projector for viewing the results and blinding any secret service people that may get in the way to block her from viewing it on the screen. This leaves Obama free from doing it himself and raising suspicions. And will be the real reason he visits Red and pins some sort of Presidential Medal on Jim for "services" to the film community. Jim will then get another $100 million mysteriously popup in his bank account and big secret orders from the CIA for corgie harnesses, for wide angle Micro Scarlets that, oddly enough, are the shape of bells used on dog collars, which oddly look like corgie harnesses.

Laser projector frequently asked questions

Laser projector frequently asked questions

I don't know if I can afford one of these, but I would like to use it for community events and approach my local council about getting one, if it affordable enough for them. So there America few civic minded questions I would like to ask.

- What precautions in using it should we follow?

If you have it set up at home, or events, people (particularly kids) may stand in front of it and stare into it, from far or up close. Laser light can be a number of times more destructive then normal light when the light is tuned to a materials most reactive frequency (in thus case we are worried about eye structures in particular). Also interactions with TGE optics of the eye can greatly concentrate the spot sizevsnd intensity. I am uncertain about the interactivity and the miminal safe levels. I did try to contact one of the laser light show associations about it, for my own laser scanner designs, but they effectively did not know the answers, as they did not lookup research. It maybe that the projector is not bright enough to do this, or is tunable down to smaller screen sizes.

- If the device is tunable down for smaller screen sizes, I would like to ask if a physical key lock for max brightness I'd possible, to stop knuckleheads from turning it up when to jazz up the image when the owner is not around?

- What sort of distance is safe, or should it be mounted ten or fifteen feet above the ground to keep people a safe distance?

Well, I guess that ends most of the safety concerns, so I'll ask a few more general questions, that may help.

- Water/weather proofing? Sounds like an excellent product for outdoor events, something every.local government authority would live to own. But weather, particularly in some parts, is unpredictable, you might be fine for days weeks months, then suddenly one night it will rain suddenly. Dust, cobwebs and spiders are other concerns. A few rubber seals, port enclosures, and the weather resistant heat sink mechanism from the cameras, would make it very durable and desirable outside.

- Surface color calibtation? I came up with this idea years ago, usefull for presentations on buildings, grass etc. Adjust the beams color and intensity based on the color of the surface beneath pixels, by the reflected color coming off of it giving the inaccuracy that needs yo be compensated for. It canbe done dynamically, but a simple brief setup before starting maybe often all that is needed.

My favorite:
- Using it as a 30 meter wide Microsoft Surface Computer? Great for kids to play games with in the park ;) he he . Or the Apple version to be released next year.

- included presentation software, operating system ( Android, Linux, Windows ce) and remote (Bluetooth)? For presentations ( and surface computer like apps) etc. This could be done with a ten dollar board with access to video and sound ports.

- wireless av interfaces for weather proofing.

Have spent some time looking up the latest in laser projection releases. Seems to be a number if recent releases. A number of inventions I won't have to physically implement now.

Including a couple of American laser companies, at least one in California (I wonder). Also found a laser projector with 4000 by 4000 pixels.

Seems to be a number of 4k projectors, even 8k.

I know this was a scarlet day, but I was hoping to hear more about this projector, Specs and price.

Hahaha, im actually really amazed. We managed to stay remarkably on point tonight as far as questions were concerned, i felt. More actual Scarlet questions than "HEY WHATS BEHIND THAT CURTAIN OVER THERE, THOUGH!?"

Id like to demo that projector, and man I would like my company to use it aswell. it would make our product that much better.

I was there last night, and I must say it was a great event.
Any chance on letting me sign an NDA to check out the Laser Projector :)
I kept peering through the netting last night and drooling over the red ray...pretty awesome!
