Stupid question. Are there any plans on making Red Pro Primes with canon mount? The reason for this is that I would really like to be able to use the redmote pro to pull focus remotely without the extra weight of an external remote focus. And also that I’ve ordered my scarlet-X with canon mount.
Does the mount itself affect the image in any way or is it basically just different ways to attach the lens?

Cheers

There are no plans to adapt the RPPs to Canon mount, but RED in the past said they were developing some new electronic lenses. No one knows what mount these will be designed for, or when they might be released. I wouldn't count on anything though, so for the time being it seems like some Canon L glass might suit your needs.

EDIT: Of course, these lenses were announced during the ages of the fixed Scarlet, and it's clear lots has changed since then. Sounds like the main reason the fixed scarlet was scrapped was because of lens focus issues, so its always possible the entire electronic lens endeavor was shelved. Who knows.

Thanks Ian, that's what I think I'm going for. Do you know if there's any difference between the two mounts imagewise? Or is it just the way it is attached?

The current PL and Canon mounts have no difference image-wise (they literally just hold the lens), aside from the indirect factor that there's simply higher-quality glass available for the PL. Though as it stands right now, the Canon mount is the only one that allows electronic control of lens.

There is no difference between any two mounts image-wise unless one is just a piece of crap that doesn't hold the lens parallel to the image plane. Mounts hold lenses, and they allow for control of lenses. They have no effect whatsoever on image quality.

Where mounts differ is in rigidity. When you twist a lens to focus it, you can move the lens if the mount is not rigid enough. This is where the PL mount excels. It's just a rock. Red's new Canon mount borrows from the PL (Positive Lock) idea with its locking mechanism to make their Canon mount much more rigid than the one on Canon cameras; this makes it that much better for cinema use. The same is true of the Optitek Nikon mount, the A-mount, and will be true of Red's electronic Nikon mount, I'm sure.

Looking ahead to Red's electronic lenses, they have said that they will use a new Red Electronic mount. I would expect this to me more rigid than any of the still-lens mounts. And I would expect the lenses to be mechanically more sound than any of the current still lenses. But no one has seen any of these things, so this is just a guess.

It would be cool if RED made one of those CANON to PL adapters that could feed the DLS trough so if wanted people could use the RPP's and such with their canon mounts... without having to change mount.

We have both mounts for our epic and I do not really like to see that people rent is and swap mount like 5 times a day or so because they are on both PL and EOS glass.. Then they could get the canon mount and an adapter instead.

I don't hink thats a particularly interesting product. Its already made by a number of companies ... and there is no benefit to Red.

Using such adapters is problematic on Canon DSLR cameras because of the shutter. Often the PL lenses project into the mount and will hit the shutter. This is why there are PL modified 7D cameras which, among

The best way to handle this on Red cameras is the "right" way ... swap the mount. Just take out your RED Canon mount, and install your Red PL mount. Takes less than a minute and it works well under all but the most extreme conditions.

You can NOT use a Red Mote to control a PL lens in any case, on any camera. This is because PL lenses do NOT have any internal motors or servos.

The Red Mote will not work with cameras other than the Red Scarlet and Epic.

If you want to remotely control PL lenses, then you need a remote follow focus system. This is comprised of motors you attach to the iris rods and a handheld control unit. You can use these control units wirelessly and wired, depending on what you buy.

On the low end Red Rock is planning a remote follow focus. On the high end there are systems offered by ARRI, Barco and C-Motion, amongst others. These systems can go for tens of thousands of dollars.

I Agree removing the mount and replacing it with another and take your collimator and such is the right way of doing things. But then there are quite a few people that definitely want to do things differently. Like getting a few PL lenses and have a few EOS and not have to unscrew the mount when swapping in between.

The red canon mount is not like other EOS mount's its thick. So I think if they made a adaptor in the same manor then it would not be as flimsy as the blue ebay rings..

When the 7D came out I was the first one in the world to remove the mirror and gut the camera. I also sold enough of those gutted / modified 7D's so I lost count and I know from doing so that people does crazy things to get a certain lens on their camera. So I know a red EOS to PL adapter would sell, I think it would sell almost as good as the scarlets. I would buy it, most people with a canon mount I think would buy it. The people that does not afford all PL would buy it.

Not because they need it, but because its opens for other options and even if those are not ideal it would be cool to have a colimetered EOS to PL Ti adapter that was built to be as sturdy as possible on the epics /scarlets. Not because it's needed, only because it would be very possible.

One of the more crazy things I saw when selling those 7D's was a guy (forgot his name) that had problems to pay with his credit card over the web, so he took the first plane from singapore to stockholm, paid cash and ordered a taxi to go back to the airport... He had a shoot the day after and he serving a DP that told him that "he needed it for the shot"...

It's when the DP says "I need this EOS lens for every second shot..." this thing would come handy. :)
