  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Pro Primes 2.0 (Battle-Tested)

Just out of curiosity, are there lenses in the 18mm to 35mm that cover 6K that people here really like? I currently have the canon mount, but will get a PL mount if needed.

Thanks,
Mike

Sorry buddy, didn't mean to sting ya.

Give me some credit, Will. I was repeating what was on the e-mail. I'm not that clueless.

I figured since the email and product said "2.0", that these were new versions of the lenses. It made sense to me at the time.

Any FF lens will cover 6K. Canon L series glass, CN-E lenses, Zeiss CP.2, etc.

You can find a full used set for 15k without much trouble.

I started browsing the forum for a set of RPP's just a couple days ago. What timing! Continuing to look for a privately used set makes no sense so... I put an order in this morning!

I've been thinking of selling my RPP's, but haven't decided. On one hand I really, really like them and they've paid for themselves in spades. Then again, I haven't been using them all that much recently because I spend most of my time with the Optimo DP zooms on the camera and I have the Schneider Xenon FF primes coming in whenever they start shipping. I keep mine in absolute pristine condition and they're in the larger RPP case. I'll probably wait until RED clears out their current stock of BT sets so the price can go back up a bit. A couple months ago, I had a chance to sell my RPP's for $23K and declined... Heh.

If you are serious about about a set check the Marketplace section on this forum. I love the marketplace and sure, when I see a set for sale I'll post if this thread is still alive.

Post some links and we can all have a look and see how they compare.

Your implication is these lenses have been available for 15K for a while.

I already bought a set. I asked you to supply links cause I looked in the MARKETPLACE and can't see any REMOTELY close to 15K.

It would be good of you to only post SOLID info in these threads.

RED's set are very lightly used by the sound of it but a touch more expensive due to taxes however they come with a 90 day warranty. Warranty or not, the confidence of buying from RED over ANY private seller can't be calculated. A less important factor is the case looks nice and clean :biggrin5:

I can't recall if your glass was rented out or personal but even if they were your own I think your cost is now high and gives a buyer zero motivation. So in effect the used market has been affected.

Not the first time Red does something that screws people trying to sell their Red gear on the used market. BT Red One at 4K anyone? Really making me re-think my Dragon upgrade - better to rent Dragons from others for a while and wait for the next random price slash.

I totally disagree, this hasn't affected the market value at all. In fact it shows that there are still a number of people who want these lenses. And I can't say that RED has had any random price slashes. Let's not forget that the price on EPIC cameras went UP at one point, then went down late last year. I didn't feel that any of those adjustments were random or truly unexpected. These are not film cameras that hardly evolve over time, they don't hold their value the same way. How much does a used F23 go for these days? LOL. What about an F35? RED One for $4K did affect the market for a bit, but prices are back up again since we can't buy any Battle-Tested R1MX cameras anymore. Of course, prices are not that much higher, there's only so much we can expect. $10K can buy a reasonably decent R1MX kit with side SSD module, some accessories and power. So far my EPICs are holding their market value better than any other digital camera system I've ever invested in. So I'm not sure what you're expecting here. Checked out the market value on a 2 year old used Alexa lately?

Well said Jeff!

And there is the service advantage...I think RED selling these sets now ensure all the RPP owners a little longer service life, no?

;)

Any lenses that are ready for the Dragon sensor will explode in price, more than double.

Look at what happened to Super Speeds. A new set of MKIII was $15k and there were tons of them. Those same lenses are now $50-60k for a set and it's hard to find a set for sale.

With the hype of Dragon, this camera could take over the Alexa market too. Speculation of course. I ask myself one question these days. Which lenses is the new Super Speeds?

Your answer....
New Schneider Xenon primes, Nikon FX stills lenses, Zeiss ZE and ZF stills lenses, Zeiss compact zooms.

This is the END of the RPPs.

The Dragon will hamstring the lenses, they simply don't have the coverage for power users and rentals.

Wait for the Dragon release. If you want to own a BT RedOne, or a used Epic, without Dragon, now is your chance to score BIG. Buy the camera system for cheep, wait a few months and score a set of RPPs for blow 10k.

Under 20k you can have the whole package to make a movie, on a budget, in 4k minimum. Then enter your film in the shot on RED festival, the 4k film competition and let the movie you shot be your vehicle to upgrade your package by winning the competition.

Well said Jeff!

Well that's not entirely true. There was one HUGE price droop at the end of last year when the Price of Epics were slashed in half...
I can totally understand and acknowledge the anger some owners felt but as a whole I believe the move was in line with the founding principals I believe to be REDs.

Your investment is in yourself, make your movie.

Those with a "stock market" mentality got upset, that they saw the RED cameras as a finical investment instead of a creative one.

I didn't feel that any of those adjustments were random or truly unexpected.

This is the perfect response - totally agree with you on everything.

Yes..exactly these are tools to make images and hopefully the images make money.
The camera is a massive depreciating asset just like a car is.
Some people were counting their cameras as if they were real "money in the bank" and that's on them.

Probably anyone considering a $50,000 Carbon Dragon or a $50,000 car should have ten times
that in some sort of liquid or fixed asset. But these decisions are very personal and involve
risk vs. stability and so there is no rule of thumb to follow.

..Or you could just ask Suzy Ormand.

Suzy Can I Afford it..? used $95,000 Porsche 911
