  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Pro Prime set FAQs

Anything will help... :-)

Don't you know it. Just don't tell the wife, I have her convinced I'm a hottie.

Finner, hope you stop by the Rio. You'll be surprised. And we'd all like to see you there.

Jim

You bet we will be there. Look forward to seeing you.

cheers

Full Specification Matrix to be posted on Wed.

Will MTF charts be published? If so, when? And at what spatial frequencies? (Some manufacturers only publish a paltry 10 lp/mm and 30 lp/mm.) Will the MTF be based on theoretical performance of the computer model (like Canon and Nikon)? Or real-life measured performance?

Wow I've had a theory since my very first Red expierience that this was a factor, and why "perfect" lens sets would vary distance between their range.

Good work Red, and wait to have a set.

This is very interesting...

Even though it was a stroke of genius to pull the OLPF away from the sensor (for reason of dust etc) I was concerned about other side effects. I've always wondered if the thickness and distance from imaging plane should be a calculated part of the optical formula (that images on the sensor). To my lay brain yes? But is this a significant yes?

Any less lay brains care to offer some coherent thoughts?

regards

You are quick to notice the slippery-slope of published specs. If one is not careful, you can look like the worse lens on paper even when it isn't the case.

I would vote for a spec sheet on lenses with uniform criteria without having to read the small print. I am also surprised at some companies T-stop claims and how far off they are. But until the time when spec sheets are fair and truly represent what a lens is, we will lean on the lens projector to help customers differentiate. As stated elsewhere, a lens projector does not tell you everything... but we think it speaks much louder than a spec sheet. At least the language of the lens projector is consistent.

Something less than $20K for the set of 5. Don't look for massively less. When you see the mechanics and performance, the question will likely be "why not more".

I'm sure I will. Not sure my accountant will, though ;-)

I'll post the final price on Tuesday night before the Reduser party on Wed.

Sounds good. Will you also be posting information on estimated delivery schedule. I expect people who ordered them "back when" will get served first and then everyone else. If I'm to put in a reservation for a set now I need to know when I have to put down the money. I also have an Epic X "upgrade" coming ;-)

I´m sure they are good... more than reasonably good.
My greatest concern: delivery dates. When may I be able to touch my set, after ordering as a plain customer, from my distant country, among perhaps some other 1,000 or more orders...
Lack of a couple of sets of good prime lenses has been, by far, my major setback for renting my two Reds. I have good camera systems, zooms, tripods, matteboxes, filters, HD monitors, downconverters, etc. etc. but the second question on the phone is always "And what are your optics?"

We expect to have the 1st couple of hundred sets out by June and all the orders from NAB filled by late Summer or early Fall (depending on how many orders we receive this week). 1st sets get delivered this week.

This reading sounds similar to that which was offered to me few years back when in Miami at the Arri location there when testing the MP's, but for some reasons I'm far more exited about the RPPs, look forward to Wed.

Would there be a possibility of mounting the Master Diopters on the 85 and or 100?

ciao

I know the camera is a big deal.. I own one! But somehow, and I cannot put my finger on exactly why, I think the RPP lenses are causing just as much, if not more than a stir on the market place.

Thank god

Jay

Thanks, Jim. I trust I'll be able to order a set even though I'm not going to be able to go to NAB? :-)

Jim i am not able to come to NAB but i definately want to put an order in for a set of RPP. When will i be able to put my order in.

Yes to individuals in the Fall.

Yes to ordering this week online.

Yes to Monstro. Officially, it is Mysterium Monstro.

What are Unit Focus designs? Which lenses use them?

IBloom

Unit Focus moves the cell inside of the housing (very similar to a Cooke S4). Any lens over 50mm will use "unit focus" and all under will use "internal focus". We have found that breathing characteristics of all these lenses competes with the very best (validated by those that have seen them and demonstrable on Wed.).

One of the comments we have heard most by those that have actually seen the lenses on the projector is the absolute uniformity (from 25mm to 100mm) of every characteristic... from resolution center to edge, lack of light falloff, lack of CA, lack of breathing, and well controlled geometry.

I hope you can see for yourself at the Rio.

Hey Jim, how are you guys approaching current Red owners. Do you just go up the serial number ladder and ask those who have not placed a reservation if they are in or do we early res. Red owners without a RPP res. have to send out an email if we're possibly interested in being apart of this?

RED ONE customers have priority. Those that placed an RPP reservation "way back when" get extra consideration.

We are going up through the list by number and asking R1 owners if they have interest in a set of RPPs. I think they have one week to decide before losing priority. We sent out the 1st email last week (I think- Brent would know for sure).

This process will go much faster than the RED ONE or 18-85 zoom did. We are trying to learn from our brief past.
