  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Pro 7" LCD

We have seen it, but it will only ship in the summer which is kind of a headache for the current people taking delivery. That would mean spending $1,700 now to have a functional package, when a better product is coming in only a few months. In my opinion, the PRO LCD should have been available when announced to avoid this kind of situation. It is true the PRO LCD is more expensive and people could argue it is a different product, but come on, let's stop pretending this time... I'm sure the vast majority of people about to pay/take delivery are in the very same dilemma.

On the other hand, I must admit it is simply amazing that the RED company keeps pushing the boundaries. I only wish you can actually buy their products!

Yes Mark, we have. It's called using the search fuction;)

Matthew
sorry - I am on the boards a lot less these days - I actually didn't see it come up using the search function - but I only tried "pro lcd" - I'll make a greater effort to poke around a bit more before I post next time -:matrix:

As to one:
You could use an interim HD-SDI or HDMI solution if you wish to wait

As to two
.... I have one here ... :)
(OK. that was maybe uncalled for, but you can actually buy their products...)

I can understand that frustration - but MOST companies will not tell you ANY details of future products and/or upgrades. Apple is a perfect example.

I think you should actually appreciate the fact that RED is telling you what is coming next from them. I know I do.

Gunleik is on the money with "You could use an interim HD-SDI or HDMI solution if you wish to wait" - you could RENT an HDSDI on-board, or buy a cheap prosumer HDMI monitor. Many to choose from there.

For the record, I think there are some real advantages to owning BOTH the 5.6" and the 7".

Question, could you use the RED LCDs on other cameras?

Red Pro Lcd

Red Pro Lcd

Is it the same resolution as the 5.6?

Yes it is the same pixel resolution, but its bigger, brighter and maintains true colors over a wider viewing angle.

I do appreciate very much RED's policy of announcing new products. I am only pointing out that the current situation as far as LCDs are concerned is indeed a bit frustrating... Especially for someone who is taking delivery and has to decide on what to spend his money.

By the way, I asked this in another thread (actually two!), and still no answer... Would it be possible in the future to run two LCDs at the same time? In that case I may go with the 5.6 now and later keep it when I buy the PRO version.

In talking with some of the guys both at NAB and RED Day, it sounded like the Pro LCD is actually going to begin shipping very shortly -- the next few weeks -- but only ramp up to big numbers and mass quantities in summer. Sort of like the EVF.

In other words, if you want one sooner, place your order now.

That is the very nature of this business. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMETHING BETTER TOMORROW!

Personally I welcome the early announcement of new products!

Seriously, if Red waited to announce the product until it shipped, then you guys would start complaining "that if only you knew you would have waited"...it really is a no win situation.

Bottom line is that in this industry there will always be a better product available shortly after you buy...in order to survive and prosper long term in this industry you have to understand this fact and learn how to factor this into your rates.

Don't feel bad. Not everybody lurks around the user forum or RED official site to check the latest info all day long. There is nothing wrong posting or asking something that some people already know. Remember, there are the rest of us.

Yes, I found out about this new monitor around NAB time and feel the same pain as others. But I wouldn't be offended if somebody else posts it again.

Gunleik, did I understand correctly, you have the 7" Pro LCD? How did you get it?

There are a few prototypes out there going through the proper testing with our alpha testers, but we are not selling them yet.
