Has anyone been working with the new 300mm Red Pro prime that can provide feedback on tests/real world experience?

Resolution? Contrast? Mechanics? Edge-to-edge sharpness? Bokeh?

Do you like it?

Any feedback appreciated. Trying to decide whether to buy or pass...

Thanks,

M

Recieved the lens a few days back, so far I´m very impressed. Mechanics are great. What i miss so far is a way to mount a Lens Support. Front Diameter is 118mm so a MB 15 or MB20 fits well on the Lens.
MOD of the lens is 2,4 meters.

Attached a quick and dirty setup, distance was 7m (21ft) and a 300W fresnel from about 4m distance on the chart to get the T2.9
processed at Rec709 with Redspace Gamma, no Curves.

Real world tests will follow later

I bought 3 Tiffen 43mm filters for my 300mm Pro and they all do not fit in the slot. Once screwed in they are slightly too thick to slide in. I will try Hoya filters next.

The Hoya filters work. I'm using Hoyas with mine.

Overall it's a nice lens. Some breathing, but very sharp and very little CA (almost none). It handles flares pretty well. I do a lot of outdoor shooting with minimal kit/crew and I wish that it had standard mounting threads on the front of the lens so I didn't need a mattebox or custom clip-on filter holder to mount a polarizer. The official word from RED on that was that mounting filters to the front of long lenses like this is not advisable. Hmmm... OK, I'll agree from a conventional cine-shooting perspective. But that attitude doesn't jive well with the ENG / EFP crowd.

While the RED 300mm Pro is a very nice lens, I would recommend that anyone who uses a Nikon mount on their RED or a Canon solution like the Birger, take a look at the 300mm still offerings, put some gears on them and go. At least that's my recommendation to the ENG / EFP crowd. The RED 300mm Pro with its lack of standard front threads and its heft with a lack of integrated lens support attachment (WTF?), are some pretty big negatives against it. Then again, it's a very nice lens in optical terms and for a PL mount, cine-style lens, it's a bargain. The mechanics are buttery smooth and if this is any indication of how the upcoming RED primes will turn out, then it's a sign of great things to come.

Has anyone been using Formatt filters with the 300 Pro?

Any issues with them fitting in the slot?

Thanks in advance...

Comment: There should be a sticky note on which manufacturers fit and which ones don't - or is it somewhere I didn't look...
