  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Pro 300mm Support

I'm also using the Zacuto support that Jon B. linked. The 300mm definitely needs support, too much strain on the mount otherwise.

Put a Red Universal mount under it with a 1.5" bolt through it from the top. Then you can back it out until you feel it carry the weight of the lens.

Won't that scratch the barrel of the lens a lot?

The bolt solution definitely works, I started out that way. But in situations where the camera is moving, the bolt doesn't provide lateral support or any physical means of stabilizing the lens. So I modified my bold support with some pieces of thick rubber and heavy metal strapping bent to cradle the lens (with the rubber inside it). Worked great, but it was ugly. People always made fun of it, clients were not that in to it... So I got the Zacuto support. It uses their zip-tie thingy to hug the lens when needed.

I e-mailed Jacek from Optitek about a week ago about a support for the 300mm as I see they make one for the 18-85, but he hasn't e-mailed me back yet. Have e-mailed him in the past too without getting a response. Pretty poor customer service if you ask me.

Hello Tony,
I responded to your 18-85 question- this is something we carry in stock-our 18-85 heavy duty support bracket kit. Optional carry handle with accs mounting provisions as well. We also have a RU addapter kit to convert the RU bracket into a support bridge. Complete solution. I'm pretty sure I put all this info into my 18-85 reply to you.
As far as the 300 no solution for now- I looked into it a while back and the support ring would not be very easy to make-there is a very little room to wrap around the lens and the ring has to have awkward section profile.
As I said before: 20 pre orders will get me involved in it- so far I've received 3 emails about it. So lets try again:
email me at jacek-at-optitek-dot-org and I'll come up with a professional solution for the 300mm Pro as well if there is enough serious interest.
Thank you guys, as always, glad to be of service!!!

Hmm... I never got your e-mail Jacek, but thanks for getting back to me in the forums. I would definitely like to preorder one, but not if it's months away. I need something very soon that works and that I can send with my 300mm when it goes out on rentals. Obviously I can't send it out with a 1.5" bolt, gaffers tape and expect it to come back in good condition ;-)

If anybody has a 300mm in the Baltimore Washington area, I'll take a look at one and I'd be happy to make a run of 5-10 supports, if any body is interested.

I don't use one with the 300mmPRO. Definately my 18-85 but not the 300. I don't know if there is a weight tolerance released by RED but in reality the lens is not that heavy and i am happy enough to use it without. But others opinions will differ...
