  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Primes

I would not be surprised if the lenses were being built by Fuji Optical as they are the largest producer of imaging optics in the world.

I have quite a few of their Voigtlander, and Zeiss Leica mount lenses. Not to mention the fantastic Zeiss Nikon mount lenses they are making right now.

Who is actually making them?

Who go the sub-contract?

I've heard either Ekran in Canada or Optima Elite in Russia.

Sorry guys - I meant ELCAN in Canada, not Ekran. I know Ekran was a Russian company.

If you visit the Elcan site, they mention they are making:

"a new range of cinematographic lenses for a leading North American motion-picture equipment company"

http://www.elcan.com/ELCAN_Business_Areas/Commercial_OEM/

So, is this Red ???

Elcan have made prime lenses for Panavision in the past, so .....

ELCAN has made glass for IMAX too. In the end it doesn't matter who manufactures the RED lenses. What matters is the lenses themselves, they still could be entirely RED's own design and manufacturing could have been put up for bid to Canon, Zeiss, Cooke, Nikon, etc.. or anyone who was interested and capable of producing the lenses for RED. Assuming that is even how it works, as RED may be handling assembly themselves and procuring glass elements from one source, mechanics from another, etc..

All I can say is that I have high hopes for the RED primes and I was very pleased with what I saw at NAB. The fit and finish of the 18-85 zoom and the prime prototypes they had there was excellent. If these new RED "PRO" lenses perform as good as they looked at NAB, then they will be a great product for a great price, just like the camera. I just hope they arrive soon because I need some primes!
