  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Pocket Rocket

FW3200 is coming out and the spec has just been approved. 4 times faster, so is USB3 at 4800

so thats either 320MB or 480MB minus the usual overhead of 10 to 15%, course no laptops carry this yet. might take a year or so

actually FW3200 is 381MB/s and USB3 is 572MB/s. And yeah, plan on the usual overhead and inefficiency of about 15%.

ExpressCard 2.0 was finalized in March. It's twice as fast as the current ExpressCard 1.2.

Jeff, since FW800 is roughly 1/3 of an ExpressCard's bandwidth... is it possible to make a card that has the equivalent of 3 FW800 busses?

ExpressCard 1.2 (current flavor) has a max throughput of 2.5Gbit/s, or 298MB/s.

FW800 is 800Mbit/s or 95MB/s. Theoretically, it's possible. There could be a slight bottleneck on the ExpressCard interface if all three FW ports are peaked simultaneously, but I doubt that would be an issue since most FW devices / interfaces can't reach, let alone sustain, the maximum speed anyway.

What I would love to have is an ExpressCard that has both an eSATA and a FW800 port. Obviously that's more than a single ExpressCard interface can handle for maximum bandwidth, but that would still be one handy card.

Express Card 2.0 is out also , that doubles express cards present rate. anyone who thinks computers are fast enough never had to do video on them. a machine 10 times faster than what I have now still wouldn't be enough for me. 8core chips should be standard by end of year so we might see a 16core mac pro out by then

Not to mention 10 Gbit Ethernet. Products are already available. Give us all and an inch and we'll demand that mile:)
