  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If Red has a mattebox for their Epic, why not make a follow focus, too?

Who says they aren't?

But more importantly, how can Red make a better FF than currently available?

Well, maybe if the follow focus is specifically catered to Epic and/or Scarlet and Red One, then would a specific follow focus designed for specific Red cameras result in better quality or not? I'm not an expert, but you do make a good point that there are other follow focuses that are good, and I don't know if Red is making a follow focus for their cameras...

Frank,

I would be personally interested to know what you find deficient in the current follow focus offerings when taking into account price vs. performance vs. features from the host of manufactures.

What do you want it to do: what are you willing to spend?

Economies of scale are a perfect scenario for mechanical camera accessories and the follow focus is the benchmark of performance and “feel” relative to cost.

Best,

you mean like this one?

But honestly I want to know what the RED Community wants in a new, smaller, double sided mechanical follow focus?

Best,
I've never really used a follow focus, so I can't say that I find any high end ones deficient... My thinking was if Red made a mattebox, why not a follow focus? But I guess you're right, there are third party follow focuses that are great.

Seeing as you have never used a follow focus before: you should try out what’s available…you may find something out there that works for your production needs.

Myself…Well I painted the FF-4’s black, had input on the FF-5, worked with Jim Elias and Mitch Gross on the MFF-1 and most recently introduced the OConnor CFF-1. So I have some experience on this topic.

Eric, how about a FF more in line with the pricing on the Obox? I'm very impressed with the Obox pricing. Meanwhile the Oconnor FF pricing is just slightly below Arri. I dont want to spend $3,000 on a mechanical follow focus. $1500 for the same thing would be ideal. Solidly more expensive than all the Redrock, Cinevate, Zacuto, etc., but not the prestige pricing of Arri.

+1

Pleassseeee RED make a FF system for cine (gears) and still lenses (gears or via lens control)

But honestly I want to know what the RED Community wants in a new, smaller, double sided mechanical follow focus?

How about an affordable compact motor I could snap on to it that would be compatible with the REDMOTE PRO? :willy_nilly:

Yes Shawn that’s what I am advocating…we already have prototypes which can be seen on the web BUT we want to get it right the first time. That’s why all of the feedback from you guys is so valuable.

Again, I will ask: What do you want to see in a double sided cine follow focus from OConnor?

I keep asking to be a beta tester ;-)

Alright, here ya go.

Zero backlash and the ability to torque stiffer lenses like a new Red Pro Prime in cold temperatures.

Clearance for bigger lenses like a RPP or a zoom

Ability to do wider gears for lenses that travel a bit.

Good grip feel on the wheel.

Removeable focus wheel markers

Removeable opposite side for dumb side operation.

Gears made of material that won't slop after a year of use.

OK Shawn,

I have no problem with it…We are about to launch a new marketing campaign for the USA and Canada. Europe and Asia are to follow.

It specifically has to do with O-Grips…do you want to take part in this?

Never been done before in any marketing class and WILL be a pain in the ass…guaranteed.

What do you think?

The OConnor CFF-1 does all of this...

Then talk to whatever manager that sets pricing and get them to bring it in line with the same pricing strategy as the obox :-)

Alright, sending you an email on your earlier post

And you could buy an ARRI and it will serve you(with no backlash) for the next 30 years...
Have to admit the O´Connor looks very attractive, and it is lighter and will most likely last for more than 5 years....

Just so you know...we made most of those ARRI units.

And the reason we made made the CFF-1+ O-Grips and the O-Box is to last you the next 30 years...

CFF-1 is awesome, no doubt about it. With all the adjustments it takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you do there is no comparison (and I've used most of the other options out there).

With Scarlet/Epic, I think weight and price will be the keys. Since the camera is so light, I think people are going to want to stay mobile - especially up here in the wild west =)

As for price, right now there aren't many options in the sub $3k range that I've seen... and those that I have had to make some serious compromises. If Oconnor could make a little brother to the CFF-1, that would be awesome!

And if you're ever looking for people to beta test, let us know. We're game!

cheers,

Colin
