Hi All

I have currently have a Cannon mount but considering doing a little rental on the side. I know a lot of Pros use PL Lenses so looking for the right mount.
Apart from the weight issue of the lens, are there significant differences with a 3rd party mount system like the x ones that would-be renters look for?

Thanks!

Cameron

The red PL mount is the only one that is smart ready. i.e. Smart lenses (pl lenses that have electronics in it.) all third parties are dumb mount. Which isn't a killer but the red is also titanium and you know for sure it is the right mm from the sensor.

Although the WC and Foto Akcessoria PL mounts work just fine, if you intend to rent, you better invest in the RED titanium PL. You will find that the rental market is very picky, and they want what they are used to...not items that are unfamiliar. I have learned the hard way that what is acceptable to an owner/operator is a lot different than what is acceptable to a rental client...especially one from out-of-town, like LA).

If you get the opportunity, test the 3rd party PL with Anamorphic lenses to make sure it's "square"... That's the only questionable thing I've heard about with the 3rd Party PL mounts (and it hasn't really been confirmed/denied).

Thanks for your responses.

I'm still a little uncertain what the pins actually do. From what I understand they transmit some data about the focal length and possibly help with Follow focus with specialized glass, not your typical Zeiss cp2's set?

I'm going to go with http://woodencamera.com/RED/New-Releases-RED/PL-Mount-Epic-Scarlet.html , for now.
Moving from a scarlet to an Epic when ordering was a last minute impulse decision. ( I wanted the FPS!!!). I need to catch my breath a little bit but will go with the RED version when I can.

You can read all about the iTechnology thats created by Cooke here:

I have the Foto Akcesoria and I've told every single renter that it doesn't have idata and not a single person has cared. YMMV. I also haven't talked to any compositors who have ever expected or used the data for anything.

Couldn't agree more Tom. As an AC, I normally always go thru a brick and mortar ( none of that lensrentals.com shit) rental house and for the most part there is definitely a standard for gear. Arri matte box, anton bauer batteries, ronford sticks, etc..etc. NO-ONE likes to rent an owner operator package with cheap gear. Gone are the days of red rock aks and redvolts trying to be passed off as acceptable.
