Good Day,

I have a flakey problem that is driving me nuts. When I connect the SmallHD to the HDMI port it works about 80% of the time. The other 20% I get a no sync message on the display. It also becomes extremely difficult to get it back working again. The order of turn on makes no difference. What is interesting is that if I have a pani hooked up to the SDI output, I can watch the status display on the pani monitor change when the SmallHD is being connected. I would imagine the Red polls whenever it sees something now connected to the path. When the SmallHD is in its nonworking phase, the pani does not change status which leads me to believe the Red and the SmallHD are not handshaking. To complicate matters, it is also very finnicky on what HDMI cable is used. Out of ten, it likes one. . Does this make any sense? I have tried the display on a different Red and it did not experience the same issues. The other Red did not care about what cable I use. SmallHD has been great in working with us. They have swaped out the display. Yesterday we did a firmware upgrade to the display and Red and it took hours to get the display working again. I found that going to playback usually got it back online. Has anyone experienced this before? it is frustrating.

Thanks!

Find some Caig Pro Gold contact cleaner and clean the HDMI contacts on both cables and ports. Sounds like cable or contamination issues to me. Cheap cables can be a problem, but HDMI can be unbelievably sensitive to the slightest amount of dust, moisture or grease on the contacts.

Thanks David. That was one of the first things we did. When it is working, you can wobble, plug and unplug you name it and it is solid. Yes, bargain basement cables are bad. It seems to like the Blue Jeans Belden type the best. Very nice robust cable.

In my experience with the smallHD (DP6 SDI) I have found that when I have the R1 set to DVI and turn the smallHD "ON" before I start up the R1 the HDMI handshake works out fine. If I turn the smallHD on after the R1 has booted up, I get the no sync message and I have to go into the R1 menu and switch from "Menu" (DVI) to "Video" (720P) and back to DVI to get the image to show up. This is when the DP6 is connected via HDMI of course.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,

Thank God someone else has seen this issue. Only difference is when I do follow the correct startup procedure as you mentioned, I still occaisonally have the same issue but correct it the same way.

Have a good one Jan!
