  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red one should be honored with Monstro

You have an upgrade path to Mysterium-X 1st. Then to Monstro. Or you can wait for the Monstro upgrade. Or you can trade in for EPIC. Or you can keep your RED ONE, get a 12% discount on a Scarlet system, then upgrade your RED ONE. AND... you are at the front of the line.

Some of you must not really get what we are doing here...

Are you asking for free upgrades forever? If we would have ONLY announced a sensor upgrade for $6K, would you have been happy?

We promised that the RED ONE would be upgradeable. It is. The sensor is the primary upgrade. We have already upgraded (for free) many options along the way... including anamorphic support in Build 18 today.

What is it exactly that you want?

Some people need to "Want" they are never satisfied and can never just make the most of what they have...Its a bottomless pit trying to fulfill that need...It never ends.

I find the idea of buying a New Red One Now more compelling than ever...What a F-King deal...A bargain...A steal.

There is a quote by William Blake "The worm forgives the plow" ... Progress is turbulent never mind the back-seat drivers...Forward!

Pretend for a moment that Scarlet and Epic don't exist..

This is the way I see it: when you buy a Red One, you know what it can do, and what it is used for. You buy that camera for a specific purpose. You are promised that it will be upgradable. You receive free firmware updates that drastically improve the performance of your camera. New sensors are developed, and you are given the option of upgrading your sensor for a fee...

The fact that your camera is upgradable and the fact that it is still tirelessly updated, improved, and supported completely and totally fulfills Jim's promise.

Now Scarlet and Epic have entered the picture. Has anything about Jim's promise to you changed? YES.

Not only are you able to upgrade both hardware and firmware, you ALSO get a discount on the new products. You are ALSO first in line everytime for anything.

And if you want out: You can take every penny you put into your Red One into something better (EPIC).

You are right. Jim did not keep his promise: he changed it and made it better.

I can understand drooling over the new toys, but guess what? You have a camera NOW. You can take your camera, and make wonderful things with it, while the rest of us not only wait for the other cameras to come to fruition, we will also be waiting in line after YOU.

If I had had the money at the time, you had better believe I would have been an early adopter. That is the only time I have ever seen being an early adopter pays off. You guys are treated like royalty.

I am not trying to be preachy, I just want to give my perspective. Be happy! It is a wonderful time to be a filmmaker! :}

We have said all along that the RED ONE sensor was upgradeable. We never said "only once"... or "whenever we feel like it"... or "just long enough to do our duty". I guess I assumed that with all the effort we have gone through to support our RED ONE customers, they all would just assume that we would take care of them.

I have to wonder how many other companies even think about this stuff...

Approximately none I would guess. Unless there are a bunch of "firmware updates" for my Sony FX1 waiting on sony.com that no one told me about :) or a nice new 3K sensor or a CF module :)

There was chatter on these boards about the Red One only going up to an X sensor. Something about the heat or processing power not being able to handle the monstro.

I think that misconception explains some people's thoughts that they were getting left behind.

Eh? I don't think I've ever seen that discussion. Monstro was announced as the successor to the Mysterium X and as an option on the upgrade path for the RED One. Even right in the very first Monstro thread.
 
I'm so stoked about the beta build 18 anamorphic support! I love my RED ONE and am so excited for more information regarding the scarlet 3D rig. Just wanted to share my excitement. Today is a good day guys! We don't even have all the information yet and remember "Everything in life changes".
 
Just so we can be clear about what Red has done for early reservation holders.

Put down a deposit, get 110% refund if you decide to not take delivery
$2500 credit towards accessories
Free Firmware upgrades, that not only enabled/fixed things but added new features
Replace original batch of cameras with new ones
Provide exceptional customer service, perhaps with a bit of extra TLC to the early adopters
Replace audio boards at no charge (you can argue this was Red's problem, but still a good gesture)
Offer an upgrade path to new sensors
Offer upgrade path to Epic
Offer discount and place in line for Scarlet
Offer first dibs on accessories
Put early adopters at the head of the line to see Crossing the Line at NAB
Treated us like part of a family

There are other paths Red could take on this. Jim doesn't have to offer what he's offering. It would be within reason to only offer the sensor upgrade. R1 owners have helped Red get to where they are now, but Jim has been very fair on a lot of things and I think it's only fair to acknowledge that he will continue to try and do right by his loyal customers.

Most importantly. R1 owners will have had their cameras for a while by the time these other cameras ship. It's up to us to get our ROI. I know a lot of people have. They are the ones that had a solid plan in place, had existing contacts, and didn't go into this blind. We all need to take some responsibility when it comes to making this a worthwhile investment.

Must just be me. It wouldn't be the first time I heard something that no one else heard.
 
I am a bit unsure what all the complaints are about. To me its clear that Red have offered us a really great upgrade path. They have given us great choices. And that is probably the biggest problem. CHOICE.

The fact that they have offered us to buy back the RED one for the price you paid for it, in order for you to select any new brain you want is pretty much unheard of from any other company. You can then also chose how you want to customize that brain, with which ever sensor you want. Your red one sensor upgrade is going to obviously cost money, to think it would be for free is a bit insane. Once you get the upgrade of the sensor, would you charge your clients the same money to shoot?

So we have the choice of which path we want to go, and we have first crack at it. Which is great.

Don't forget, most of us would have had the time to make our investment back by the time we get round to choosing which upgrade path to go with if not more than our investment. So if you really think about it guys. What they are offering us is pretty great.

Keep pushing technology forward RED, and thanks for giving us all this choice!!!
 
It depends on perspective.

You bought a RED, and there is no need to update it - its yours for no additional cost.

But you want obsolescence - understood.
However, everything becomes obsolete in this ever changing universe...and rather quickly at that.

Now Red seemed to have tried to do something a little different than the crowd. To help ease the pain of transition and change as things become obsolete.

In many peoples minds, I suppose they imagined always having one camera and one body that could be updated.

That is a nice concept and idea, but this approach has a novel concept as well...much like a set of legos.

The main point is that, either way, you were pretty much guaranteed to be kept from obsolescence by an "aggressive" upgrade path.

When new technology surfaced, you were going to be able to upgrade, for a cost for it. (Though the original concept felt like you would have it set for the rest of the digital age that shoots in 2D. At least that was the impression with the initial hype.)

So they have offered that people who want to upgrade their RED1s just turn it in, and instead of them stuffing new stuff in it...they give you an Epic.

Now there is some concern, that those who dont want to upgrade, now have a machine like the Scarlet.

I would say, it should be this way, to a certain degree.
Price always comes down and features go into lower priced cameras.
Technically speaking, if you had the $$$ to own this RED you have a few thousand to upgrade to an Epic. (though getting a good update in the Epic area will cost some money.)

As we now know, however, Jim has said - to comfort the RED1 users - that the Scarlet is missing some features like ramping, time lapse, etc.
Again, I would have thought this would be there - just due to how technology moves, etc. But it is as it is.

In the overall scheme of things, Red now has a place amongst Canon, Sony, etc. (Sony is the 'god' ruler...puppet master...over canon and nikon.) :)
If you look at it, in a way RED is the Apple of the video industry.
Everyone has their place and they compliment one another. (Some apple carts are knocked over, but the industrial wheel as a whole moves its cogs together as they transition to the next phase of technology and pricing.)

While its probably more of an evolution than a revolution - (something Apple is good at, marketing) - that is how things work, otherwise can you imagine what the industry would be like? For better or for worse, people tend to like change given to them in a certain pace.

For many, what Red is doing is still 'over the top'.
But one day they will become common place and a house hold name like Apple. And then the 'cog' will turn again...

I will say it is nice to see the latest offering from Red by the way.
Would like to get my hands on that Scarlet. (Well actually the epic as well as that big 256mp camera...forgive me if the count is wrong.) :)

i dont think anyone expects anything free jim, we just wanna be invited tot he party also..and thanks for clarifying
