I know there are countless other threads on this, but a lot of them are cluttered, and I’m looking for a quick response. I am completely new to the RED world so be gentle on my poor, unfortunate soul. Here’s the dealio, I’ve got about $8k to get started (maybe just a little more) and I’m really looking for the necessities to get up and shooting with the RED ONE. From what I gather so far, I have....

RED ONE MX W/ Side SSD - $4000
64 GB SSD - $725
RED STATION - $250
POWER PACK - $1450 (Or would it be a better option to get third party batteries?)
Battery Belt Clip - $290

Things I’m wondering about are display, extra media, and a Canon mount. I was thinking about buying a third party HDLCD monitor and saving some money. What ones do you all recommend? I also assume I should probably buy an addition SSD card? Aaaaand lastly, the Canon mount. I have Canon primes so I need an adapter. What is the best one to get? I’m looking to upgrade to Zeiss CP.2s in the future but right now, I can make do with my Canon lenses. Is there anything else I need to grab to get up and shooting or help workflow in post? Thanks a bunch guys. Oh, and this is my first post!

Hi Andrew

There's so many identical threads that answer your question. Just go to the Red One subforum or do a search.

Cheers

The only third-party Ive used with the RED MX is the SmallHD DP6.

I am sure there are cheaper ones out there.

Good luck, its a great ride ;)

I'd highly recommend looking into another SSD card (always want to so you have one you're shooting with and one can be on standby when you need to dump footage). Another option is to get a 320 or 640GB Red Drive and cable which are far less $ than the SSD cards. You'll have to factor in a mount for them as well, ET Isolation Mount, Cradle, etc.

DP6's work great with the Red One and are great for focus - but run quite a bit more than the original 5.6" LCD from Red and you'll also need power for the DP6 where as the 5.6" powers from cable straight from Red One.

Canon mounts typically run a bit more as well compared to Nikon mounts, but if you only have Canon glass you really don't have a choice on that - you'll have to get that mount. Another thing to consider is support and mounting. Is this going to go on tripod, mattebox eventually, shoulder mount? If so you'll need to factor in those accessories for that as well (bottom plate, shoulder dovetail, cheese plate, top mounts, universal mounts, handle rail, handles, etc).

Hope that helps - take care.

How is the original 5.6” RED LCD for focusing? Also, I know the Red Drive is a spinning drive, how often do they skip while going handheld? That’s probably what I’ll be doing most. Looking at this for a shoulder mount:

Andrew the weight of the RED MX along with extras might be a bit much for that rig.

Better research this one.

Check the RED MX forum section for rigs.

Thats how I got my ideas for my Scarlet.

Andrew my bad, I didnt read the specs just the actual weight which I assumed was the weight it can handle.

What are some good third party batteries I could get to save money?

What are some good third party batteries I could get to save money?

You will need to research this part.
Sometimes you get lucky depending on your local.

I find the cheapest is used but not sure if thats wise.

My experience has been only with AB for the RED MX.
It was inherited from the old XDCAM gear.

For my upcoming Scarlet, it'll be REDVOLTS but only due to affordability.

check out the group buy on the third party vmounts that clip together, they are pretty sweet PAG Professional Broadcast Equipment

I found these ones:

FWIW - I recently saved a couple hundred bucks by purchasing a slightly used Red Brick charger on eBay. Might try that. I know there are also some Bricks available but I might be a little concerned about "well used" ones. They could get you started, though.

I hope this helps... Cheers.

If I were brand new to RED and not clued in on building a great handheld system, I would run AWAY from Zacuto's convoluted, craptastic handheld system (not trying offend anyone btw, just my first hand experience). First off, the center of gravity is waaaayyyy to high... So many things wrong with it, no time to list them all.

Keep it simple... Please checkout the pics of Evin Grant's Rig from back in 2009. I modeled my RED system after this was very happy with this setup on Hundreds of Commercials and I greatly appreciate Evin's advice over the years concerning RED, Lenses and AKS.

This system is cheaper and MUCH better suited to Professional work.

I hope this helps and sends you on the right path! Cheers and have fun with your new camera!

But you would still have to buy rails right? and how does that shoulder pad even attach?

Hi Andrew, may I ask your background and experience level? I ask this so I can better help you... We all started at zero.

Did you look at the pics in the other thread? Are you familiar with Dovetail plates?

http://elementtechnica.mybigcommerce.com/15mm-red-bridge-plate/

Which Iris rods standards are you looking at? 15mm or 19mm?

http://elementtechnica.mybigcommerce.com/iris-rods/

The Shoulder Pad Straps onto your body NOT the camera... This setup (and those like it) give you the lowest possible optical center of gravity. The other HH rigs sit really high on one's shoulder causing a LOT of ergo problems, etc. Not the way to go for me...

Here is Evin's pic from the thread that I posted above... The Dovetail plate attaches to the bottom of the camera and the shoulder pad is strapped to the Camera OP. Make sense? No worries if not... Will try to help.

If you start by purchasing Industry Standard Gear, you usually cry only once... If you buy non standard AKS, you will will spend sooo much money. When you purchase a Professional Camera expect to eventually spend x3 (or a LOT more depending on what you want to do) what you spent on the body just for AKS.

Experience with RED gear? Zero. As far as filmmaking goes, I have several years under my belt, but I’m just taking advantage of the prices to upgrade from my DSLR and 35mm EX1 rig. A lot of the accessories you have to get along with the brain is new to me. I just have around $8.5k to spend so I’m trying to get the necessities until I have a few more paychecks come in.

I shoot most of my stuff handheld anyway, so was just looking for a rig that would fit my budget.
