This may be a stupid question, but which is the better camera, right now, overall? This video says that the cameras better than the Scarlet are the Epic and the Red One: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBU8rMi05sU and yes I know this is the fixed lens 2/3 sensor Scarlet that never came out, but is that statement still true? What is better now and for the future? Will the Red One be discontinued or be upgraded to the Dragon sensor? I know the specs, Red One shoots 4.5K and 120fps at 2K, but Scarlet has HDRx and is way lighter. What do you think is the better camera right now and/or for the future? Thanks for any help!

It's a pretty personal question that doesn't have one right answer. Do you need 120fps at 2k? Do you mind having a heavier camera that requires a better tripod/legs and is harder to rig up and use on the fly? Do you need some more dynamic range? Ask yourself these questions and make the decision. I don't think anyone here can answer that for you.

You're right. I'm just curious about what the majority of the people think. Thank you!

I've shot with both the RED ONE and the Epic and after using the Epic, I really don't want to use the RED ONE again. The scarlet and Epic will rent a lot better, and will be easier to use for a LOT of projects.

However, when Planning for my productions, I need some of the features that the Epic gives me, namely HDRx and High Speeds. The epic will be available for Scarlet productions that have a day or two of high speed or HDRx needs, while the rest can be shot on Scarlet. As for the RED ONE, I find that it's just too big for my style of shooting. I like to be lean and mean, and when you shoot with a heavy camera (F900, F32, RED ONE) you need bigger and more expensive support, and more space, etc.

My big decision was, I can live without 120fps for now. I'm sure I will have it someday with the dragon upgrade, but I can focus on other things and just start building my equipment around the scarlet, which to me, was the better future proof option from here.

For me, the extra 1 and 1/2 stops of DR and the future hdrx ability were the dciding factors. When and if you need to overcrank, rent.

Just my 2 cents

Budgetary concerns will make a big difference.... If you are on a tight budget, you can pick up an amazing deal on R1. A fully fledged shooting kit. For the same price, you will get a bare bones Scarlet.

If you have the cash though, Scarlet betters the R1 in nearly every respect.
