You're right, this is the first one I've seen on eBay too.

But it does not look like a good deal, and that's not even considering the cost of ownership transfer and re-warranty.

Yousuf - can you elaborate on your comment? I'm semi-interested in buying a Red so would like to know more. What are the costs of transfer and re-warranty? And what's not a good deal about it? I thought perhaps it would be a good deal, partly because I could avoid the sales tax on buying a new Red, as I live in CA. Thoughts?

EDIT> Scott was faster. Hunterrichards clarified it...

Original 1-year warranty on the camera does not transfer to the new owner. This guy's asking price on ebay isn't a bad deal at all, especially if he agrees to split the ownership transfer costs, tune-up costs, etc.. Which is what seems to be the most logical.

In many ways, it makes more sense to just buy a new one and get the full 1-year warranty. OTOH, this camera would put you at least 3000 places in line ahead of a new camera for upcoming Scarlet / Epic purchases. But that's a gamble. We don't really know what that means yet. It could only mean a difference of a couple weeks or it could mean the difference of a year. We just don't know. RED has said the wait for the new cameras won't be anywhere near as long as the back-order wait for the RED One. Hope that's true.

Be careful with the tax issue. You could still end up having to pay sales tax on the camera purchase if you or your business ever gets audited. Also there is a production tax waiver in CA that may allow you to purchase the camera with a discounted sales tax rate.

I just transfered the ownership of a RED camera last week- it was $750 to simply do the S/N transfer- then $500 extra if you want to send it in for evaluation/additional warranty.

The S/N transfer can just be done through e-mail/ over the phone with kelly@red.com- no need to send it in to RED unless you want an additional warranty.

If I had to chose between saving 10% on a camera or getting a brand new, full warranty one (and new, bigger harddrives, etc.), I know which way I'd go.

And get at the end of the line?

People forget how valuable these serial numbers are? Remember when Red use to ship minimal quantities?

I guess if you can wait then buy new.

I agree. And RED won't give warranty until all repairs (if any) are done, so you should be sure there is nothing else wrong with it. Yes its a #3000 serial number but that doesnt mean if you got a new #7000 serial number you would be light years away from getting a Scarlet/Epic. I think once those things are really in production, they should be available faster than R1's debut (my opinion).

It's a used camera for almost new price, just buy a brand spanking new one. I don't think anyone knows how "valuable" a such and such serial number is because no one knows the production timeline of EPICs/Scarlets. I think about today -- and if I can just buy new rather than used, I will. That's just me, tho.

EDIT: I dont have sales tax considerations since Im not in CA, though. That might make a difference, not sure how much. But like someone said, you may still have to pay in the end if u live in CA.
