Hey Guys,

So after 2 months of my fiance and i waiting and saving $$$ we were able to invest in a used red quickplate off ebay and a off brand v mount battery. I tried booting up the camera today with no luck. The battery is telling me it has juice in it, but nothing. I dont have a dtap cable to test of its the quickplate or the battery. Its very frustrating when things like this do not work given how much it costs. any thoughts? :emote_headwall:

yes, get out your volt meter and measure the voltage at the pins, with a battery connected.
If you get nothing anywhere, the plate or its cable are not working, and you should return them for a refund or to be repaired.
While you are at it, measure the voltage on your battery

Further thoughts! measure the continuity from the lemo plug to the battery terminal on your quick plate.. then open up the quickplate and test the continuity from the internal connections to the pins on the lemo.

If you don't have a multi meter, buy one.. You are always going to need one in your kit in this business.. they should be around $30 at home depot.

Chris, where can i buy a volt meter for the quickplate? one idea i thought of is it seems the pins in the lemo cable are quite a far distance inward in the plug and i feel like the pins might not be making the connection on the back of the red.. is there a way to move the distance of the pins?

also does the red quickplate only work with RED BRICKS? this could be the issue as well.

Mike-
Double check and make sure the battery you purchased is compatible to the RED ONE.
Even though it is a V mount battery, the RED ONE needs a battery that can handle a HIGH power draw.
If there's a rental house around you, try powering your camera with one of their batteries before determining the plate is the issue. I bet it's the battery not being strong enough to power the camera.

You can read through this thread that further discusses the issue.

I am heading to procam in aurora, illinois tomorrow to see if they can be of any help. i know they should have some D Tap cables and other v mount options for me to test. My fiance's father also has a volt meter so i will try that as well tomorrow. will keep you all posted.

I have a feeling that this Rolux battery i got is the problem, not the plate, but we will see.

Cool- Keep us posted.
I have a feeling it's the battery as well.

BTW- Adorama in NY does sell a cheap 160 watt/hr battery that works fine
with the RED ONE. Since they are in the US, the shipping is a bit reasonable compared
to the batteries bought overseas in China.

I've been to adorama when i've visited nyc. love them and B&H, i will check out that battery once the one i have is returned and i get my refund. BTW, i see a D TAP port on the side of the quickplate. can i plug a D TAP cable into the quickplate to see if the red is getting power from it?

Chris said Home Depot, or if Radioshack still exists try there, or online.

Lemo pins distance is fixed.

D-taps are typically wired directly to the battery plate pins, so a D-tap cable to a device would check the battery is supplying power to the plate, but would not confirm power on the Red One Lemo connector.

BTW. It sounds like you're not particularly technical. If so, be very careful if you ever attempt to disassemble the Lemo. It has two metal internal shells which fall out. When reassembling they MUST go in a certain orientation - there are little keyways which MUST lineup with the red mark on the external shell and the pins assembly. If they don't all line up properly you risk connecting power to the wrong pins on your camera resulting in expensive damage to the camera. I'd advise not disassembling the Lemo, unless you know what you are doing!

Yes, I agree. I am fairly technically experienced, and I would avoid opening a lemo connector.
But you still should own something like this, and read the manual

Only measure the ground to power outputs, and compare to those from a RED AC adapter (if you have one for your camera).

I strongly suspect you have a battery that is not sending enough amperage at 14.8 volts through the lemo connector. You *probably* need to exchange it. Also, to use the camera in any production capacity, you need more like 3 good batteries at a time.

It is remotely possible that your lemo cable has a broken solder joint. If you need a local vendor to visit to check with, perhaps Cineverse might be able to help. They have long dealt with Red cameras.

So just to reiterate so its on the forfront of my mind, how would i use the volt meter to test that the red quickplate is working correctly?

hey guys,

i have some great news. Andy at Daufenbach in Chicago got my quick plate working. There was some crap on the pins causing the power not able to get to the red. he cleaned it and all is up and running :).
