Yes, I know. The Red One will have an upgrade to Mysterium-X 35 (EPIC X S35 Private Reserve package at the $28K offering). But will the Red One have an upgrade to Monstro? Will it be a Monstro FF35 or S35? How much?

Monstro upgrade path on the RED ONE:

We also said we would offer a RED ONE sensor upgrade to keep it current in a world of ever-improving electronics. We have kept that promise with a Mysterium-X upgrade path when it is finished, then to the Monstro sensor which will follow.

The RED ONE can be upgraded to Mysterium-X after EPIC S35 begins shipping. The RED ONE can also be upgraded to Monstro sometime in 2010.

From Mysterium-X to Monstro S35 sensor size*:

There is no S35 Monstro sensor at this point. When there is one, there will be an upgrade path. There will always be an upgrade path as things become available.

* Not clear if for both or just Epic (thread's subject).

On the upgrade path only comprehending the sensor, not exactly the brain, there's just an unofficial subject to change thought, not final position though:

We will likely (not for sure) make a sensor upgrade path for a brain BUT. It probably is a bad idea for two reasons.

1. The electronics that goes with a given Brain will likely hold back some capability of a new sensor. It may be major or it may be minor... don't know right now, which is why we have no official position. Remember that electronics inside the Brain will also improve as time goes along. That's why we prefer the "matched set" approach of sensor and electronics inside a Brain.

2. The cost to upgrade just the sensor in an existing Brain will be relatively expensive, nearly the cost of a new brain (75-80%?). In that case, you'll end up with only one working Brain instead of two. Buying a new Brain and selling the old Brain, even at 50% of it's original cost would make better business sense. Or at least it makes more sense to me.

I'm answering you because you asked and are a good customer. But this is not an official, final position. Just thinking out loud. This is one of those "subject to change" thoughts because we really aren't prepared to tell you anything yet. There is a lot of time for us to develop a final position before anyone has to make any kind of decision.

My best.

My understanding is that once you upgrade to EPIC – X for $28K – $17,5K = $10.5K any other upgrade will be the difference in price between EPIC S35 and any other brain price.

Unless Jim will surprise early R1 owners with some special deal again?
