  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED One / Mysterium Spectral Response

OK, but what does mean normalisation here, what´s the normalisation function, and how is it achieved?
Couldn't we simply call it a gain in blue chanel? (and bit of it in green, or negative gain in red, or whatever)

It's only a way to look at the three channels with equal distribution. It doesn't directly relate to anything on the camera such as gain, etc.

For each channels, find the highest point and divide the the value by the highest point. That just fits the graph to 0-1 with each channel spanning the full range from 0-1.

I believe that chromaticity was what was being referenced over on CML not spectral response. Yes spectral response is a reult of spectral measurement but the spectral measurement referenced on CML was the chromaticity plot.

To say RED has a smaller colour gamut than REC709 is some kind of joke though, not to be taken seriously. I certainly don't take comments like that seriously.

Sorry for my ignorance and it's a little late but I can't seem to go to sleep, but anyway, does this say anything about the tungsten vs daylight issue... that it's preferable to use bluer light (daylight) when shooting Red?

So if the bluer channel is more robust in the mysterium, this issue goes away?

wow thanks so much for posting this RED - incredibly interesting to see the spectral separation, far better than I think most of us thought.
This really is Gold.

thanks so much

Certainly I don't disagree Graeme. It seemed implausible to me when It was first shown to me in Europe. I think if you guys show an actual RED One chromaticity plot it would quiet the critics and reguide, as JJ referred to what some , "...misguided soul posted on CML."

Displaying a chromaticity plot based upon the xy chromaticities of the RGB to XYZ transformation is very misleading as to a camera "gamut". That sort of plot is reasonably meaningful for an output device, but not so for a input device.

Sure it does: before normalization blue is weaker than red. To get the same level of blue, you'd either need more energy (i.e. daylight) or more gain (i.e. noise).

does anyone have the F23 ?
Thanks so much for the Dalsa.
Very very informative.

I just love the level of serious engineering here at times.

thanks to the community and RED

The genesis and 5218 curves overlaid with the red curves:
YOU ARE COMPARING THE WRONG CURVES should compare Relative with relative not relative with normalized.

So what about it RED?
Are you guys going to post something that shows this?

Not being a technical wizard myself this kind of omission leaves me to wonder if there is at least some credibility to what your critics are saying.

If there is no reason to post it, then fine, but at least help us understand why.

Hi Denan , how sensitive is the myterium sensor when we talk about dust ,eye lashes ,sand etc . Can we clean it ?
Something happens when you put it into direct sunlight?(with a lens )

This has already been discussed a few times. Essentially same precautions and cleaning as with DSLRs.

Graeme already responded to that comment - as follows

" Displaying a chromaticity plot based upon the xy chromaticities of the RGB to XYZ transformation is very misleading as to a camera "gamut".

That sort of plot is reasonably meaningful for an output device, but not so for a input device. "

Yea, I guess it would be good if I read a little further before jumping in.
Thanks.

On a another note help me understand graphing the data for normalization.
What is the purpose of this and what does it mean?

I know this has been addressed as well but I'm still not getting it.

Its just a common presentation method, it helps if all sensor response data is shown in a like manner.

However an absolute values graph illustrates why blue is the noisiest channel in any camera system.

So best to show both forms of graph for comparison purposes.
