Wanted to share with you a short film I had to make for film school at Tribeca Flashpoint College here in Chicago. I had my RED less then 24hrs when we went into production on this so both I and the student who was serving as my DP needed to learn the basic workflow pretty fast. I feel like if we had more time, the film would have turned out a little better but i digress.

On a side note, i'm really happy at 24 making the decision continuing school. I was very anti film school for a long time, but the networking i'm making is priceless to me. Enjoy.

Mike, for some reason it doesn't play on my computer... no buffering or anything. Play shows 0.00 and pause shows the same.

EDIT: Just saw in the post above it was viewable, so maybe it's my computer settings.

O.K. now it's playing... funny double-entendre in the title. '-)

Jon - yeah, my DP just began getting behind the camera.. he's 18 and new to the whole filmmaking process so putting him behind a RED was (in his words) a little intimidating. I would have love to have shot my own film but we get marked off on the assignment if we do that (shit film school rules). The only shot I operated was the tilt up when the younger guy (played by my fiance) gets up and says "are you F**KING kidding me?". I feel like more time learning the RED and being able to shoot it myself would have allotted better visual results, but its just a class project so i'm not loosing too much sleep ;). Although i have to say the student doing the lighting knew exactly what i wanted and lit the bar shots beautifully, i think so at least. The back of the bar stuff i thought looked awful and the stuff shot at my apartment is too flat, but we were on a deadline and had no film lights available to us for that location which resulted in shit images.

Some behind the scenes pics i took on my iPhone 6.

Mike..

I am a student as well.

1. I strongly suggest you to hire "old people only" for your casting. It will convince audience very well.

2. Art direction - This is a short film. I think you tried to make your film too "deep". But, again, short film is too short to explain all these idea that you have. If I were you, I wouldn't use white wall with a painting with sofa right next to it. - It makes the no depth in the shot. Also, Student dorm is always look... bad. I strongly recommend you to meet a girl who has a house around the school, and use it. - I know I am a badass, but film maker should be a badass.

In fact, I really hoped that I could see more of Bar scene, why? because location look very convincible to me.

Lastly.... ask your audio dude to capture better sound... the sound is terrible.

I am back to school around last year and I used to be a photographer. - I am just like you, who is trying to get a BFA yet, I am 30 year old looser.

Check out some of my works, and I hoped this critique helped you.

P.S: Again, my critique doesn't mean that I am a good director or genius.. In fact all these critique that I gave you are the things that I heard during this semester.

Good Luck to you,

Minu

I really like this - I like the heart and soul of it - great job!

Thanks for the feedback. Again, I guess I need to specify more that I did not have as much creative control over this project as I would have liked to. We were given a set of rules and deadlines and I was working with teens who mostly were brand new to film as I've worked in the medium since 99, well 2003 to be more realistic. we didn't film at a dorm, that was my apartment on the north side of Chicago. In terms of story, I'm proud of what I wrote but I see the film itself as an exercise. It's frustrating when you have all these ideas and all you want to do is be behind as many roles as possible and if this were not for class I would have shot it myself in which most of the flaws in the cinematography would not exist. I thank you though for your words, it's these conversations that make us better at what we do and it also shows each other that we care and want each other to be the best artists we can be :)

bump for those who didn't see :)
