Red One MX low light footage test plus my cat:)

I kept reading about how bad the Red One MX is in low light.

I shot this with the lens at f/4 with no light except a falshlight and a small lamp about 18 feet away in the background.

Clean blacks. No grain. I am guessing now these comments are from people who have not used the camera.

I was just testing my hard drives so the shots suck. But real stuff coming soon. Everything works and is functional.
The Red is ten times easier to work with then I have read about.
Simple navigation. Easy changes.

what were your color settings and what did you use for post?

Color settings Redgamma 3
I think the other was redgamma.

Added an S curve to the flat footage and punched up the saturation a bit.

For the footage of my cat. I was playing around with a bunch of crap and have no idea on that clip. But the footage with the camera was very minimal.

I will do real tests this week and keep a log of the settings.

Thank you for these shots. Really was a bit afraid purchasing RED for low light shots. Now I'm ok.

I think you need to adjust quality levels

the lower the light the more imformation the sensor needs.... more bit rate

I used RC42 so maybe that helped a bit. Granted this is extreme as most of the time my shots are not in extreme darkness. But I love lowlight, existing light and deep blacks. I can now achieve them easily with the Red MX. I only posted because I had two people tell me it could not be done. I was told time and time again how the blacks are all grainy and lowlight is horrible. This clip shows that is completely false.

I will post some new tests soon that I will really push the lowlight no grain limits. I already know by this crappy test that the new footage will look awesome.

Erick, do you think you could do test like this on the MX? I have the original M sensor, I'd love to compare the two. There is little grain in mine, but it is definitely still usable.

Thanks for the post Erick.
I opened my R1 last night. The only surprise so far is that it's getting hot fast. After only 20 minutes of being on stand-by (not recording) it's getting quite hot to the touch and the fan is unable to cool it down. Does yours get hot without recording too?

Well... I've been renting scarlets, but I tought that the internal fan could handle the internal heating on MX. Some years ago you had to use ice bags on Reds to cool it down... Is that still necessary now?

Mine has gotten a little warm. But not hot to the touch. My house temp is set to 68. I will run it for a few hours in the next couple of days and post any heat issues here.
