YOU ARE ONLY DESTROYING YOU LOCAL MARKET $200 should be just for you. You are destroying the livelihoods of many other people.

You are a destructive force in your local industry.

I might also warn you is not entirely a "free" market. Expect a visit from some very upset competitors who enforce reasonable pricing. It's a controlled business, like Mozarella cheese. Are you nuts? Do what you want in Kansas, but not New York. Do you realize that Russian and Italian families own several rental companies in New York?

They have many ways of punishing you, including refusing your business at all rental companies (so forget ever renting lights) , and getting you blacklisted as crew (do forget a career). I've heard sometimes it's more than that if you push your luck too long - like "HA HA - Some people do still get mugged in NYC" - that's what one NYC equipment rental house owner said to me. That happened (to an undercutting Steadicam op I know). It's hard to prove. Maybe it was just random in his case, but he is the only New Yorker I know who has ever been mugged in the last 15 years, so...

Please remove this ad. Please re-think your pricing. No one respects this kind of thing unless you are working for actual charitable causes. I MEAN NO ONE. You have me as an enemy from this. The list will grow quickly.

Undercutting is a despicable chump's game.

I do not wish you luck.

What's despicable is threatening someone with bodily harm for publishing a low rate.

We all have to deal with low-ball rentals. Me too. But it's a free market and we have individual liberties. It's the U.S. and last time I checked (though we're kind of on the edge of devolution) the mafia and organized crime has no moral grounds for extortion and racketeering.

Hello Robert,

While agree that some people might be upset by this low of a rate. I think its a good idea to remember though that this is a One MX, not an Epic or a Scarlet. The laws of supply and demand, rental rate as a percentage of total value, and over all equipment condition must be kept in mind before adding a person to your black list.

Nobody is really renting Red One MXs any more, at the same time there are still a lot of them in NYC and with the recent sale of them as BT units they are not valued very highly any more. Not to mention that they are not as easy to work with as many people come to expect after dealing with current technology.

You also must remember that as somebody who is not a rental house, there are many services that he is not offering such a replacement body in the event of a disaster, 24 hour technical suport, or a large array of accessories from which to rent.

However, Mano, to keep people from Robert from blacklisting you you might want to advertise that it is a low price and have people contact you for an exact quote. You can also have a larger day rate and cut the rate down significantly upon rental of 6 days or longer. However, I, nor anybody on the board I would hope, would tell you what your rate should be as discussing and fixing rental rates for a given area is illegal.

It's only illegal if you get caught doing it explicitly. I am only inferring what other people might do. My understanding of NYC is that indies are tolerated, even indy cement and mozzarella cheese purveyors, as long "as they are reasonable".

Now look at it from a completely other, moral point of view. Maybe you have rich parents, but without those, can you have a decent life if you must spend $10 000 (or so, maybe there are deals for less, but more or less that to get a working Red One MX kit) for the "opportunity" to make $200 a day as a freelancer, in a city where rents average $2000 a month, and everything else is expensive too, even food. My answer to this is no.

Now another question: Do we want to live in a world where only people with rich parents can survive? My answer: also no.

Can you see how offering things like this openly and publicly hurts people?

Then there is even the ability of companies like Red surviving. I see your post, and I think "Gee, cameras have become terrible investments. i can just get some desperate loser to rent me his and be a free PA for $200 - I mean I pay PAs $200, so basically, cameras are now free. If cameras are now free to rent I (and anybody with any sense) will no longer buy them - which means there will be no money to fund innovation (or much less). So by being a desperate loser, this guy is hurting a lot of people all at once, people I care about and wish well.

Mano the Bozo is Blacklisted by us and the people we work with in NYC.

If he does not remove his add, no telling what might happen as other see it.

Probably nothing good.

I think Red made a big mistake with BTs and price-slashes. We have here one result. Lots of people wondering if 10K for a Dragon is a good idea (because who knows when they'll slash again) is another. Both are forms of their business model disappearing into thin air. Then what?

By the way Louis - you are reasonable. These are good but fair prices where people can make a living and pay back the bank.

Thanks for vote of confidence, Jason. I am merely passing on my savings to my clients, making movies which otherwise would not be made. So I am threatening no one's livelihood. I do not need any lights or other things as I own all of them. The idea was never to depend on any rental house. And the quality of my gear is in very good condition with the latest firmware, with a fairly large inventory, and my service is better than any rental house. I have been a operator, gaffer and soundie for more than two decades with a large rolodex. So ganging up on me is very ungentelmanly to say the least.

I took the ultimate indie friendly package deal as something that was being marketed primarily towards film students, start up production companies looking to do spec spots, and film makers that are 30 cents short of a quarter. I don't think offering something to creative types who might not otherwise have the means is a bad thing.

Thanks, Brian. Most of my clients has been from filmmakers who I have worked with before. The notion that I am peddling something inferior and that I have poor skills is laffable. I wish I had rich parents, then I wouldn't have rent anything in the first place. If there is a blacklist for Red, I am happy to blacklist myself for enabling filmmakers. In the meantime, the Hollywood Blacklist makes interesting reading:

Also keep in mind my prices are for an Epic and for a Scarlet. We must remember the camera that is going along with it.

I don't think you need to look at this as him going and performing his task and giving the camera for free. I think you need to look at it as he wants to gain experience so he's renting the camera out at a low rate and going along for free himself. Working for free to gain experience is something we have all done at one point or another. I'm sure after he does this for a while he'll keep the rent the same but add a rate for himself as well.

Either way.. I do think that threatening him to remove his ad or you don't know what might come of him or his business is worse than the race to the bottom, price wise.

Louis, I go along as free or send one of my guys as insurance which is a $1500 savings for the production. I have been doing this for lights and sound packages which cost a lot more than the Red One. And I have nothing new to learn as I have been making quality film and television for 30 years plus.

Mano, I was only trying to protect you my friend..

Appreciated, Louis.

Do what you want - but you are creating a new reality for producers where to make $200 a day, first a guy has to spend $10 000. That's a crappy reality. We rent Epics, so you are not competing with me. I was never threatening you. I am not owned by a Russian nor Italian "family" I won;t do anything at all to you. You lost my respect with your post, and I would never hire you because I only hire people I respect. But that's my right. Right now all I know about you from your post is that you are desperate and don't care about putting other Red One owners in your community out of business. Not exactly confidence inspiring, not inspiring in any way at all. I'd rather pay more for someone a wee less, uh "hungry".

Sometimes people have no money to make their film - well maybe they should wait a little until they have more. if they can;t afford $400 a day for a camera, probably the rest of their production ain't so hot either.

So... All this to say, you will attract losers, and lose the respect of people who have a bit of cash on their productions. ($400 a day is not a crazy amount - do it at $350 if you like them, then charge extra for your time). Low prices are not the way to success, reasonable prices that show you respect yourself and have confidence in your worth are. These will inspire trust.
