sir,
i am a attendent on the red camera i would like to know that when u shoot on the the camera it gets very very hot is there a chance of the camera hanging. with the cf card. when i eject the cf card or the hard drive sometimes the card does not show then i have to format the card couple of times. once i lost the footage what happened was the battery was low i swicth off the camera and but a new batt when it came on it shows unformatted y is that so. i lost my footage. pls can u help me out

We have been shooting on very hot day (Australian beach, 40+ Celsius in the shade) and we had to power the camera down every now and then to cool it off. Mind you, the camera had its own umbrella, was kept away from the sun, unlike most of the crew, including the director.
It developed some strange vertical patterns, similar to severe neg scratches. Have pix to prove! We powered down, waited for about 30- 40 minutes, restarted and all was OK for one or two takes. Another power down, another similar wait, in the end we got the shot in the can.

The only problem, is that this a feature film with important actors who were not very impressed, the skin from my lips is still peeling off from the sun burn, but we all are happy: the director just mentioned to me few hours ago that the rushes look gorgeous!

I am very relieved.

hi all...

just sharing what me and team had been through with RED.

Yes, sir !!! the temp. is HOT....H.O.T !!! so that we have to put some napkins/towel made from microfiber (usually use when you washed your car)...put it on the water (cold water would be the best one), squeeze it till it has no water drops, but still remains wet. put it on the top of RED's body, just like when u trying to put some wet blanket on the fire. The towel absorbing the heat, and makes the temp. not so damn hot anymore...

so far, from what we've been through, there's no problem caused by the heat. all day long the cam on, and there's nothing happened. hope that lasting forever.

regards,

heating heating crashing !!!

when will red sort this problem out
we are shooting in cape town
it is fairly hot but nothing like it can be
this is the first camera that i have worked with at this level that crashes on record like it does

we are shooting an international feature film with well know actors and it crashes

help help

warrick, did you fill out an incident ticket on support? What temp range? What shooting conditions/settings? With taking proper precautions and using best practices in hot or cold conditions, there should be no crashing. If there is, the camera needs to evaluated by RED.

incident ticket
i will look for it
and send one
we are shooting indoors it is between 25 and 30 deg celcious outside
we have imported a large aircon system
really dont see why it is crashing
pretty much once a day

we shooting 4k .. 36
25fps
the dop likes to have the preset buttons on veiw raw and colour or b/w

we are using 12 v brick batteries instead of the red batts
scary thing is we cannot see when they will run out
had a few crahes from what i think to be the batts

regards

maybe ??

I'm suspicious that your crashes are power related, not temperature related.

What kind of batteries are you using? Are they really 12v? I think you need more.

We use Anton Bauer 140s with the AB mount instead of the V mount, which I believe had some issues with early cameras.

The Anton Bauer batteries have a read out and the camera assistant or operator should be minding the remaining charge. Even better is the View Factor Origo which has an LED display showing remaining charge; it blinks red when the battery is approaching insufficient charge. The Origo is fairly cheap and should be standard equipment with the Red.

I hope your problem is easy to fix!

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo
