  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE GLIDETIME

Bravo well done! One of the most cleanest VFX I've seen.

Was the background or environment plate shot with the RED MX? I assume the people were shot individually with a multiple stills camera array and then composited in along with blood, muzzle flashes and bullets? Or is there another way?

As far as camera matchmove is concerned, a shot like this can be considered as "easy" as you always have great parallax all along the shot and many tracking points found at the beginning stay visible throughout the shot. One of the many things that complicates it is its length. Of course if the actors were part of the original plate - which I would have done if designing the shot - I would have had the good guys standing still with the tip of their guns held by wires and bad guys held entirely by wires. You would also need to do separate tracking of the guns (for muzzle flashes) as well as particular bad guy areas where blood spurts out and where you have bullet impacts. There is most probably manual matchmove involved as well and lots of love!!! All floating elements (hats, smoke, muzzle flashes, blood, bullets and their trails, dust) is probably 3D. A costly shot all in all but very well achieved. Kudos!

Wow!
My kind of Valentine's day :-) All shot with RED!

Usually these are done with a steadicam/moco/dolly move with everyone standing still.

3D motion tracking/CG elements and paint/roto. There's a great BTS for the 'Carousel' Spot that did this similar style a while back.

Compellingly beautiful nastiness. Well done imaging and vfx.

Link not working for me :(

I can´t seem to find the button to do that in Redcine-X, should be next to the "make perfect" button, am I missing something ;-)

Simply amazing, bet it cost a few hours of work!

Great subject for glidetime. Wonderful execution! Red looks great as usual and that massive resolution obviously helps a ton. Thanks for posting this. Great stuff!

Nothing short of amazing! This has definitely inspired me to experiment with this effect and try to find a use for it in a project!

Thanks for all the great feedback. It was a great learning experience for all involved. The shot was done in one take on the Red MX at 48fps. It took us about two hours to suspend the actors and props from wires and c-stands. I decided to do the shot handheld because our steadicam operator booked another gig:-)

Director: Steve Petersen
VFX: Ken Carlson
