  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

My question can be naive for many of You, but i really need some help.

We need Red ONE camcorder for PL lenses tests, focal flange distances measurements (adapter tests), etc. We DO NOT want to do nothing more. I mean we do not want to record material. Maybe a minute or two for Clients, but it is not 100% we have to do.

So, my question is - what we need and what we do not need to do it ?
I think to do some test (like on Siemens card or any test chart) we need EVF and Monitor. But do it have to be genuine RO items or we can use some HD-SDI or HDMI items we have (like Cineroid or Marshall). Normal is that we need power cord ;) But what else ? I've seen battle tested Red One camera set on Red ONE site for 4000 USD. Is it all we need ? Or it's not enaught ? Or maybe it is too much ?

This question is asked, becuse we want to buy PL mounted Red ONE camera as cheap as it is possible.

I hope You can help.
Thanks !

BT Red ones are no longer available.

But if you're looking to just do a lens test I'd suggest renting an epic with a PL mount and using that. Whatever house you rent from will be able to supply all that you need.

Best of luck with the tests.

Yes, but adapters are for Red ONE cameras, not Epic/Scarlet ;)

I will be very grateful if someone can just list me what do i need. Red One with PL mount and power cord - i know. But what else ?

About those BT Red cameras - can be bought on eBay or here, i do not care. All i need is to know what i really need.

Depending on what you want to test..
you could go as basic as a regular M body with pl mount, an HD/SDI monitor and an ac power supply, and a metal stand with 2 tripod tie down screws.

the camera will send signal out of the non proprietary sdi and hdmi signals.. 720p for the SDI... dont know data on the HDMI port
but most hdmi consumer gear won't see them...

an MX body will have different color response and low light senistivity than an M.
the version of firmware will also have an effect.

if you are checking color response of chip, I think I would suggest a used MX.. as they are sold out from RED USA... perhaps a body only from a Euro seller is the way to go..

The FFD Flange focal distance is the same as Arri PL.. but you should adjust the backfocus with a measuring tape, a test chart, and known good lenses.

Red also had a backfocus test tool called a "null adapter", if I remember correctly.. handy, but not absolutely essential.

We want to check:
1) lenses (PL mounted or adapted) - are they right collimated; but i'm not talking about any picture quality, but does infinity is infinity or 1.5m is 1.5m;
2) adapters (Red ONE) - are they quality is ok; i mean if measurements are 100% ok or it is needed to shim them.
That's all we need.
So i think we need just Red ONE M or MX, PL mounted with power cord, am i right ?
We have EVF and monitors with HD-SDI connection, so i think it won't be necessary to use GENUINE Red parts. Or maybe i'm wrong ?
This is what i'm asking for.

I think that a bench colimator and focus charts would be cheaper than the camera...
but I don't think that you need an MX for the tests you mention

Not if You have Red One 8 screw adapters to measure. Lenses are much, much easier and can be done on collimator.
