Ok, so I managed to pick up an original model red one evf for a reasonable price. I heard this thing is big like a battleship. I was told that this evf is generally only used for framing or hand held and that for any detailed work you want to use a large LCD or preferably an 19" sdl monitor. Is this true? Can I get by with just using the evf for all my needs and will I be able to focus with it?

thanks,
shanon

I prefer to have a larger monitor to check color and detail on, but while shooting the EVF is perfectly capable. It's acceptably sharp. It is large and heavy but if that's not an issue you'll be fine.

Ok, I'll try it. Hopefully it works. My kit is getting big, big. It is going to look like a real movie camera for sure.

Sharon, there are ways to keep the size/weight down. I have found myself recently using the SmallHD EVF solution which is very lightweight. You could also go the route of the bomb EVF but that's quite a bit more money. If you need to be really lightweight (perhaps you do lots of handheld) then weight distribution plays a pivotal role. You need to find the right balance of parts that prevent the camera from being front, back or top heavy. You need to get it so the EVF is positioned in a natural way so that you are not causing discomfort to your neck or shoulder. Takes some experimenting. Everyone has a different body type. My shoulders aren't that beefy, so RED poses challenges for me handheld sometimes.

^^ I'm thinking weight will not be an issue because I'm a big guy at 6'3", a bit like a lineman. But I'm sure this setup will get some attention for sure. Not exactly discreet like my 7d, lol.
