  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE DSMC...

Believe me... stills shooters have been watching very closely. What kept us away from "video" was the lack of RAW. When I first read Jim's posts on DVinfo a few years ago my lions twitched with excitement and started counting the days to my RED purchase.

Photography is about light, composition, subject and TIMING! When you can shoot at 24p full rez it opens up every moment in front of you.

You have lions? :leaving:

seriously agree on timing...and 24P full rez ... mind boggling really considering it seems like the DVX-100 was the toast of the town just
yesterday... how far they have come, yet so much cool stuff coming out.

Jim, you talk about how hard it is, but it's got to be awesome coming to work tackling these problems everyday... :)

Well, the truly mind blowing thing is that, given the undeniably bona fide success of the Canon 5D mk2, Canon has decided to release their 24p capability with the new release of their tip of the line 1D mk3, which as of this point, still retails for $7K body alone. So, presumably, the new model could be selling for $8-9K, and shoot 24p video at, excuse me fans, hideously unworkable h.264 video. Now, this is a well thought out, carefully planned and calculated strategy from Canon, and everything seems to point out that it will sell them a lot of cameras. Now, can we imagine for a second what Scarlet could do out there, toe to toe to the 1D, shooting stills AND 5K redcode video?!

Jim, you said once that this is terrible time to release new cameras, and I beg to differ. Epic could use some more massaging, but if you do drop that Scarlet bomb within the next 2-3 months, you will take over an even bigger chunk of the pie than you did with the Red One. You better believe it!

This has come completely full circle.

Once sought in cinema what we sought in photography, now sought in photography what we seek in cinema. Capturing a singular moment in fluid time. How many muscle movements are triggered within a single second in the human body, communicating every nuance and minutiae? Hundreds.

This isn't the new age of photography, this is a new art form all together. Its method reinvented.

This is a classic ACE post. Just perfect.

I dig this post. This is actually my area of interest in my digital media studies at my university. Thanks for putting it so eloquently, Ace. :}

This is a post to remember, thank you I am awaiting Scarlet & epic eagerly.

And it feels new! Yet familiar... like it's meant to be... cause it is.

Yea, but when can we see the second generation RED? The DSLR form factor DSMC. I am an out of shape weakling atm Jim...

So stop bragging and go back to working on them miracles! No fun for you! Yet. :hand:

Don't worry, once you release Scarlet and Epic I'll single handedly make sure everyone gets off your case and give you a full year off so you can go chill on an island with the wife.

After all of the DSMC, yes, take a month off, but after... get back to work on those 4K+ Projectors! For all those pictures of course. :001_tt1:

Great stuff!!!

Thanks for posting Jim!

After reading most of the replies to this thread, I like to add that yes the impact of the DSMC in the Photographic world will be inevitable and absolutely Profound, I know it will be for me and all my projects I will shoot with it once I will have my DSMC in hand.

The frame rates been the single most important thing, as offered in the package as they are in the DSMC systems, RED ONE, yes great but never at the range of the Scarlet FF35 34MP and the Epic FF35 and Epic 645 with 65MP, the frame rate alone with such resolution will be just simply incredible to comprehend till seen, what I'm definitely looking forward in Photography offering form the DSMC systems is off course HDR, as such incredible high frame rate ps. will have you 5HDR shots taken in an decimal fraction of a second and completely remove any chance of Motion blur, misalignment and so on.

Now the fact of Strobes not to be used entirely, like Broncor, Profoto (what I currently use) Briese, and other manufactures is unlikely as the results achieved by stopping motion when using a configuration of flashes in the thousand of WS. power with extremely fast sync speed, is unique and many Pro Photographer per request of their Agencies will have hard time, leaving behind the use of strobes, and if the sync capacity and possibilities of the SDMC system don't allow for it, as the same for HDR, then many will not be able to sale their DSLR, and have the SDMC provide for their Photographic needs as well as their cinematographic, and videography ones, such I hope it will be for me, as I want so bad sale off all my Photographic gear and just stay with Cinema gear all together, including lighting.

Off course I'll be delighted if do to the fact of the SDMC specs, and design, especially the lack of a Mirror Shutter, would allow for the same stunning photography and even with better depth and Tonality range, the currently possible with DSLR's and Strobes.

ciao

Does anyone know the lenses used for these sessions?
Specially like the Vanity Fair and the W stuff...
I printed a few RED stills today in large format, around 50 x 25 inches, and came out great!
Peace to all.

This is just the first wave of change.

Wave One: Giving the photographer the ability to pull a slice of time from a continuum of moments. (Perfect Moment)
Wave Two: Giving the photographer the ability to pull a slice of time from any point of view from an infinite continuum of vantages. (Perfect Vantage)

No longer do photographers need the trigger finger of a wild west gun slinger to grab that instant in time of perfection. Soon they'll be able to reposition themselves to maximize the impact of that moment.

Great quote. The final presentation.
