I bought two used Red Drives. A 640GB & 320GB that worked fine for awhile. But, now the camera does not "see" them. All I get is an X on the LCD screen on the back of the camera. It's strange that BOTH hard drives are that way, but it's true.

The Red-One has no problem with a CF card, but the HD are a no go. I can't even access the menus with those hard drives connected.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be? Should I send the drives into Red for repair, or what?

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

There has been NO changes since the last time I used them. They are wiped. No firmware updates. And, they connect to the PC just fine. I only have one cable and it's new.

You can "see" them on a PC? Try doing a full hard drive format in FAT32 on the PC. Then reconnect to camera and if it "sees" them do another format on camera.

Also, check you haven't got a CF card in the side of the camera at the same time as connecting the drive - I think the camera defaults to the side module if both a CF and drive are connected.

Good idea, but I don't understand the "full drive format in FAT32" whatever that means. Am I supposed to erase everything on the drive via the PC? Would that be the same as formatting with the PC?

Thanks.

On Windows PC you can do a "quick format" or a longer more thorough "full format" I seem to remember. Been quite a while since I used a PC (WinXP!!) .

It will erase all files on the drive, but it's not the same as manually deleting files off the drive. The full format makes a whole new partition with new File Allocation Table (FAT). FAT32 is readable by both Mac and PC and is what the camera formats the drive as. But you still want to format on camera afterwards so that the camera recognises it as camera media.

Thanks everyone, but after contacting Red about this problem, we have come to the conclusion that the best approach is to send the camera, drives, and cables in to RDC for a diagnostic, which is what I will do first thing next week.

Bye for now.
