  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red one & Cold weather -- Anything to be aware of?

I think everything is back to normal and I have all of the necessary accessories in the gear kit now, but for those that are shooting outdoors in anything under 40 degrees, BE PREPARED!

David, in my ears what you say suggest that the problems you've met are elsewhere or then there is perhaps some unique issue with your camera. I have shot constantly in rather cold conditions down to -30C and haven't had any single issue except the EVF. Have shot all weekend below 40F even without any cover. The only effect I've noticed is that the batteries last longer as the camera stays cooler and consequently less power is lost in heat.

Found today that the shield of the Red Drive cable got torn in cold. It seems the plastic part of the Red drive cable connectors does not last in very cold, say -20C or colder. Perhaps the plastic part shrinks a lot in cold whereas the cable doesn't, and as they form a tight and compact structure something has to break?

See the photo below showing two examples of how my drive cables have broken in cold.

This is definitely something to be aware of and has been pointed out in other cold weather threads. Cables, and not just cables by RED, but others as well and any other rubberized component, can become brittle in cold environments. I've cracked and split the rubber shielding on plenty of coax/SDI, ethernet, XLR, etc.. cables in the cold.
