For the last couple of days I went back in the archives and read thread after thread from 2008 and some in 2009...users requesting a live 1080p monitor output for 1080p recording possibly via some sort of recorder. Heated discussions to say the least.

Back then there were talks by some RED team members that 1080P monitoring and recording was not possible without installing a 1080P build...but back then priority was everything RAW.

That discussion kind of faded away little by little so it seems.

My question is...could it be possible or is it already a reality and I somehow missed the memo? It seemed back then that it would take a new build for this to happen. Doesn't the SCARLET allow a clean feed 1080p 4:2:2 to be recorded?

Last time I checked, the RED ONE had HD-SDI and HDMI output feed with frame guides and look around 720p RGB or 4:2:2...only Playback was 1080p.

Would be great to have 1080p live outputs via the HD-SDI port.

Probably never going to happen.

1080p monitoring support would require a hardware upgrade on the Red One.

I don't think anymore hardware upgrades are in the pipeline the grand "old" lady.

720p 4:2:2 isn't shabby though, depending on your needs. Most people can't see the difference between 1080 and 720 on the smaller monitors you often see on sets.

If you really need 1080p support, perhaps for live proxy recording or realtime proves deliverables ... that sort of thing, then thats a solid argument for upgrading to a Scarlet or an Epic.

RED ONE is and always will be limited to 720p monitor output during record.

We did add a 1080p capability on playback though.

The man himself...Mr. English! :)

Nice of you to respond...you were actively involved in those conversations way back then.

You might have just pushed the argument for us to go SCARLET or EPIC. I've had already about three jobs were the client has specifically requested clean ProRes files as dailies Even though I've offered the proxy files, they insist on ProRes.

We figured we could attach a recorder to the HD-SDI port and viollá. Being totally ignorant about the SCARLET and EPIC...does one get a clean 1080 output from any of those models?

Thanks

As of right now, Epic and Scarlet do not output full frame 16:9 down the HD-SDI pipe, so if the client wants online quality files recorded on A PIX240 or similar to finish with, this is a problem. Red is actively working on a solution.

so, does this mean you can take your RAW files on a RED DRIVE, hook them up to the camera body, and record a 1080p signal from the RED one SDI socket?

Hey Coco,

I too have clients that demand ProRes right off the bat, so I have a Pix 240 and a Samurai for those shoots.
i set the Scarlet to 4K and I have a slim black border on the top and bottom, and I have yet to get a complaint about that. Excited though, for the upcoming firmware fix for this...

Hey Daniel...good to see you my friend.

I remember you mentioning something about the Samurai when we met, but I do not remember the specifics...glad to hear that there are no complaints...might be good for dailies.
I'm considering the Scarlet as another cam to add...how are you liking yours?

Output is line-skipped. Don't use it unless your standards are shockingly low.

It's not line-skipped. However, the debayer process is not of the highest quality for video out from the RED One. And 1080p is on playback only. If you want pristine 1080p live output, you need to use EPIC or Scarlet.
