  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red One - Carbon Fibre - Upgrade.

Can I ask for some clarification.

....I am assuming that once the MX upgrade is done to your R1, and if you are planning to "mark it off" at Stage 2 for an Epic X and keep it, you can basically do whatever the hell you want with your upgraded R1, right? Is this true? This assumes, of course, that the upgraded R1 is out of warranty.

BTW, will any new type of warranty kick in once the MX upgrade is done?

Just to answer my own questions here for posterity's sake:

Once your MX upgrade is done, if you do plan to "mark off" your Red One for Epic X Stage 2, there are no restrictions on anything you might want to do with that upgraded R1 MX -- carbon body, unauthorized mounts, etc -- because you own it forever. These unauthorized changes will not affect your ability to use the camera's serial number as a Stage 2 "trade in" value.

However, you will lose your 90-day MX upgrade warranty. So, if some kind of problem emerges with the MX upgrade program a month down the road or whatever, I think you will be SOL on your sensor-upgrade warranty.

What's my understanding, anyway, after talking to Brent this morning.

Eric T. you are missing the point. Carbon Fiber is the point. How strong is it, very strong, we are talking Kevlar infused carbon fiber that they build kayaks out of and some other cool things:

"The ultra-rare Ferrari Blackbird guitars were sold at Ferrari Stores worldwide and signed by F1 drivers Philipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. What’s sweet about these guitars is that they are created from virtually indestructible carbon fiber which makes them super light."

The Kayak pictured here weighs in a 20 lbs.

And what about heat dissipation?
How do you get all these heat out through the carbon enclosure?
Do you want even bigger and nosier funs?
And electrical shielding? And precision of PL mount, I think the PL mount and front section of the camera is probably the thickest part there. etc. etc.

Well it'd be useful to have social network's input on those Carbon RED's,

It'd be nice too though if RED gave the company that built the bodies and all or if they gave an option when purchasing your RED to do carbon fibre bodies...

After all RED is all about options...

Good questions Andrew, and it's been done already so how did they get it to work. Obvioius and common sense points would be there would still be air openings for the fans to exhaust heat. Andrew I don't want any "funs" in my Red though, not sure what that would do, LOL.

Instead of raining on the parade how about someone with the connections get to those that built those Red Carbon Fiber bodies and ask them.
I would like to know if Carbon Fiber is a viable option from someone who really knows not just more speculation from those who "think they know".

My Avatar ought to be a dog chasing its tail because that's a bit what I feel like. All these posts and Red has all the info on carbon fiber Reds.

:cuss::emote_headwall::willy_nilly:

With all due respect Mr. Jerrod, Mr. Jannard, I realize you guys are busy, but if you are going to take the time to post try filling us in a bit more. I wasted time I didn't have to find this:

"Mysterium-X News.

The 1st project shot on the new Mysterium-X sensor is "The Social Network", directed by David Fincher... cinematographer- Jeff Cronenweth. The movie is being shot with two RED ONE cameras modified with the new sensor upgrade. David and Jeff were kind enough to shoot "The Match" (DiCaprio) for us a week before RED Day One.

The next project to be shot with the M-X sensor (RED ONE upgrade) is "Knockout", directed by Steven Soderbergh. Shooting begins in two weeks.

Interestingly enough... Fincher is using Soderbergh's original cameras that were used to shoot "Ché 1&2", "The Informant!" and "Girlfriend Experience"... so we had to prepare new RED ONE M-X cameras for "Knockout".

The 1st round of customer M-X upgrades have begun.

Here is a reminder of what the images can look like from this sensor. This is ISO 2000 at T 1.3. No noise reduction whatsoever.

Jim"

So obviously someone knows more than what they have stated.............

it is not going to happen... no speculation.

Never said it was, but you may have had the courtesy to mention that you had knowledge of when it was done by someone else.

It is this strange habit I have that I like to look at the information myself and make my own decision on whether or not it would be practical.

Using Red's stance on Carbon fiber bodies as a reason for omission of knowledge, it just doesn't jive well with me.

Now it is not even about the CF possibility, it is about the principal of sharing knowledge. This is what grinds my gears.

Off to work now......................

The Red was designed with a certain price point in mind. You are going to sacrifice certain things when you do that. Once you reach a certain point, little gains can cost a lot of money. I would not be surprised if a 30% savings in weight, would add 50% to the cost of the camera. If some people decide that it's worth it for them, then there is no limit to what can be done. It's just a matter of money and time.

Nick

Here is some carbon fiber for you. The race (America's cup) starts tonight. Best of three. Average speed of 30 kts.

Peter, that is an amazing rig! What I wouldn't give or would give to go for a ride on that.

Nick I completely agree. It probably would be cost prohibitive and there may be other problems. What they were, I have no idea. I am done my rant. I love Red and feel let down that they thought it wasn't worth there time to share information.

There is no knowledge of them being done by someone else.. so I do not know what you are talking about. There is no "information" to share.

We made those carbon bodies ourselves in-house specially for Fincher... We do custom stuff all the time.

I must have missed something along the way. I thought we were just interested in the possibility of future mods.

No information? Was it posted somewhere else about the weight savings? or heat issues?

That is not a question for Jim Shawn....

Not sure what your agenda is but you seem like your pissed off about something.. and not this.

Why don't you email me so I can help you work out whatever is bugging you...

Or by "no "information"" do you mean that Red would never give out the design mods for the CF mock up so I ought to cease and desist?

Honestly I just want to know what the weight savings were?

Thats all.

Time to close this puppy down.. its gone off the deep end.
