Sadly our RED (#0714) was stolen by car prowlers in Seattle Thursday night (5/21). It was in the parking lot of Duke's restaurant on Lake Union in East Lake. The thieves hit a number of cars in the lot that evening.

Attached to it was a 5.6" RED LCD, steel rails top and bottom, RED cradle, top handle, top extension handle, two mini xlr cables, one bnc/din cable, the Nikon lens mount and an old Nikon 50mm prime lens.

The thieves certainly don't know what they have and might not be smart enough to check under the bottom plate for the serial.

If anyone sees any RED's for sale on craigslist, ebay, pawnshops, anywhere!! please let me know. Thanks.

I'd think a Red trying to be sold "in the wild" without production equipment sales connections would surface eventually. Especially if you notify all the camera/pawn shops in the area.

There's only one way a Red could conceivably "disappear"..that would be with somebody with production contacts in a foreign country. Doubt guys stealing car stereos would have that.

People think I'm crazy when I haul all the camera equipment into a restaurant after shooting. Sorry to hear that and I will keep an eye out too.

How was it kept in the car? You describe it as all built up, was it in plain site? Was it wrapped into a blanket?

Yeah, even when I can see the vehicle from the eatery and the camera is out of site and there's nothing visible that indicates camera gear, I'll take it in. Including in broad daylight. Even a minute of distraction can be fatal.

Good luck. It probably will resurface. Will keep eyes peeled.

We will mark the serial number as stolen in our database. Any contacts RED referencing it, we'll be on it.

Thanks everyone for your sympathy and keeping an eye out. Yeah, the camera was half built up. The camera was hidden and covered and parked in the safest spot possible. Obviously that didn't matter. They weren't looking for a camera, just busting windows and taking whatever they found. I've always been strict about keeping the camera by my side, but the second I get comfortable.... Anyway, lesson painfully learned.

Sorry to hear that. Did you manage to buy insurance?
Anyone has an insurance not paying issue when something like this happens?

How many of you have fitted security cages to your vehicles? They're not pretty but keep the opportunist thieves at bay and prevent the smash and grab brigade from doing too much damage.

Sorry Erik, I feel your pain.:(

Best thing to do is let us know (as you did). We have ways...

ouch, that hits really close to home, was just at Duke's the other day, although my camera wasn't with me. In the last 2 years I've had 1 car broken into, 1 car stolen (and recovered) 1 storage unit with equipment broken into. It's one of the most helpless feelings in the world, and unfortunatly no matter how careful you are, or think you are, things like this can always happen. I'll keep an eye out as well (craigslist beware)

It seems like the vast majority of R1 thefts have been from parked cars. Did you guys happen to have an alarm on the car? I think everyone should think about getting motion alarms for their vehicles.

I always hate hearing about people getting their Reds stolen. If you go in somewhere make sure you can see your car at all times. Plus be suspicious of everyone walking around the parking lot. If they look like they are up to no good, more times than not they are. Lock your camera in your trunk next time or have steel cable threaded through all your cases and locked to the child seat lock. The idea is to make it as hard as possible for them to get it out of there. Or make it so they burn a lot of time trying to get it out so you can catch them in the act. Of course make sure you have a plan for this because yelling at people doesn't always make them stop.

Will inform you if I hear anything of that serial number .. its little scary for me as I dont have insurance !
