I just got my R1 a few weeks ago. It worked fine just about every time i've used it. Today I used it fine, then about an hour ago I tried to boot it up after swapping batteries, and it stayed the initializing screen for over 4 minutes. I shut it down and tried it again, but same screen. Then a third time. Has this happened to anyone?

Have you tried both plugging it in before boot and after boot?

If you can't get the drive to work, do a format on your computer and then try to format on the RED. FAT32 format is fine on the computer. RED should then show it as unformatted and then format it in camera. If it still doesn't work, have drive and cable inspected by RED. If you have a spare cable, swap out and see if that resolves the issue.

Thank you Steve. Worked like a charm. But for some reason my second drive doesn't load on my computer, and when i format the drive on my red, i can't format it when its set at redcode 42. but any lower setting will work just fine. Do you know the reasoning behind this?

You have to match compression setting with compatible resolutions. For example, 4K 16:9 can't be set to RC42.

Yes, it finally worked, now my problem is formatting the hard drive. When i plug in the Red Drive, it says nothing to format.

for your education (i know the problem was your settings..but one day this might help you..)

SOLUTION1 most of the problems we ever had with our r1 were caused by faulty drive cables.. there's a good chance thats why your media has disappeaared
1) if red still sell them, DO NOT BUY THE 6ft cables!
2) even the 18in one can break fairly easily, always carry spares (i know, they're quite expensive)

SOLUTION2 sometimes the circuit boards in the red drives themselves packup and die, that would require a red fix obviously.. try pluggin drive into a computer to check
good luck
