Day for Night-ish...

Ok I posted the my grade (day for night) on vimeo. I did a little and quick editing on FCP, cropping some frames from the original 5K file. Is amazing how the 5K resolution gives a lot of flexibility...
Unfortunately the H264 compression sucks, but the ProRes is pretty cool...

I can't wait to have my EPIC-X :-)

PS: Thanks Jarred for the file to play with

Fun stuff to watch for:

1) When the STS main engine light off (but before the SRB's), the entire shuttle stack pitches forward, and then rebounds back while the main computers are verifiying proper main engine operation... at the top of the stack it's about 6 feet. Watch the tip of the orbiter move towards the yellow/black warning symbol on the tower.

2) The "frangible nuts" (commonly thought of as 'explosive bolts') on the bottom of the SRB's nozzles blow just prior to the boosters lighting off, you can see the puffs of smoke at the bottom of them.

3) You can see the steam mixed with the SRB exhaust as the 300,000 gallons of water they use for acoustic suppression is dumped in the exhaust tunnels.

Awesome footage.

Oh nice. Have a good look at the steam clouds on the left at 0.50 - 0.53; this grade really brings out the shock waves from the SRBs passing through the steam. Never seen that so clearly before. Very... volcanic :-)

I couldn't get vimeo or youtube to accept the .mov file, and was trying to figure out why I could play it back on my computer, but not be able to upload it without it failing. So I uploaded a 4k version of the video to my server:

thats unreal, thanks so much for posting that Jarred

I tried to get tickets to the last couple shuttle launches to take some stills but didn't get lucky with the lotteries. My friend got lucky with the STS-134 launch but thought the email was spam sooooooo we were too late to the party. Pretty awesome to have a launch .r3d to play with, thanks again!
