  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED One at NASA Shuttle Atlantis STS-135 Landing

Hey Guys,

I just noticed this, pretty sweet! You can see it solidly just after 37 seconds for a few seconds on the left hand side while the shot is under Atlantis!

Maybe the owner and or operator is on here! Very cool to know there is some awesome 4K footage out there covering STS-135.

Hey thats me on there sweet thanks for finding this!!!

We have been documenting the last 3 shuttles since Feb. and I cannot tell you what a awesome experience it has been to serve as Director of Photography on this project. I have been fascinated by the shuttle since I was a kid.

I will see if I can upload a shot or two the Reds worked flawlessly. And special thanks to Mitch over at Abel for hooking us up on a remote trigger, amazing how now one else could figure it out.

Was there as well with my R-1 for the final three launches, Atlantis' lift in the VAB and its eventual roll-out to the pad, and the final Endeavour landing, also at night. All in all, an unforgettable experience. An example: at one point, our project was placing 3D GoPros on the mobile launcher platform with the full Atlantis stack on it, waiting to roll out (the VAB doors were already open). The MLP manager was super gracious, as were all our press escorts - so when we asked if we could walk to the other side of the MLP, he said: "Sure... just, uhm, duck under the tail." When you're as close as we were to imminent flight hardware, your heart is always beating a little faster. Mine was basically pounding as we took the path to the other side of the platform, where we indeed had to dip our heads under Atlantis' vertical stabilizer (which was marked by two hanging ropes to let you know you should duck). You could look up and see the orbiter attached to the massive, orange external tank (you really got a sense of its foam texture) - Atlantis' three main engines packed tight and dangling, the SRBs loaded with propellant... all nearly so close you could reach out and touch them. Unforgettable! Memories made so in no small part by the dedicated and loyal team of NASA employees, who clearly were savoring the program's finale - just like the rest of us.

Is it okay if i post a frame grab?

big thanks Jarred for this fascinating r3d! Much appreciated!

There is some flicker in the smoke when the shuttle lifts off (viewing on Redcine-x 487). Is this real, coming from the flames of the engines? My guess is yes, as the flickering shows more in the smoke next to the shuttle, the smoke in front has less flicker. In the other r3d (STS122 lift-off, 23.967 fps, from Mr. Michael Hastings), which is shot from far away, one can also see some slight flickering, but much less.

Thx so much for the footage. Snapshoot from Premiere CS5, garded with Magic Bullet Looks 2.
is it ok if i post the footage on vimeo?

1000 thx Jarred

Awesome shots, man. Thank you.

Great clip, amazing! The Space Shuttle has amazed me ever since it's first flight. What an incredible accomplishment, and nothing in the world beats it on impressive hardware!! Anyone else notice the thing falling off from near the right window as it lifts off? (not hard to see with the resolution really).
Thanks for posting, one of my regrets when I die will be not having seen a space shuttle launch with my own eyes, must be awesome (and the noise I imagine).

of course... I'm kinda surprised that nobody has posted a graded video yet.

just a grab for now... I just love the detail!
love how, when you grade real dark, the steam gets really massive!
and the color change from the beginning of the clip to the explosion... just awesome.

Were any of the epic shuttle shots done with HDRx? Shuttle is a perfect case for it. When we shot STS-122 it was hard to know where to put the exposure since it is such a big change when the solids light up.

hurry up and download guys... i gotta take it down soon :)

i meant to do one, but i've been rotoscoping... i'll do one right now! just give me a few. thanks...btw :)
