  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red ONE and areal photography

Tek did you nail it down to drive bumps or was it codec errors caused by an overlaod of picture information?
We had similar problems with wescam and problem went away when iris was capped. Open up iris and codec errors reappeared.

We identified a couple of dropped frames via bumping.

Drive is not ideal but still worth considering/testing in the short term if landing isnt an option

Wescam platform 'toppled' leading to a codec error.

Bumps

From the man in the helicopter there.

We also had problems with stabilizer it self shaking violently after the drive screw got loosened. The drive cradle was the problem there.

Next time I will taped the Red Raid tight to the cradle.

Aerial Exposures...

Here was a great rig I used on a doc recently. 14,000' up in Indonesia!

It is made by Aerial Exposures. We carted this rig around the world and it worked beautifully, however, you really have to make your RED as light as possible.

It takes some practice to get a feel for operating, but eliminated all high frequency vibration and small bumps.

Aerial Exposures

Yes, You can buy it. It is called the LSG-2 and you can get them direct from Aerial Exposures in NJ or from us in Europe. I would strongly recommend the KS-12 gyro system - bigger and stronger and will easily handle a fully loaded RED set up.

A difficult aspect of rigging this device is that it is top heavy and has a small footprint.

Also the camera and gyros hang on the outer frame via elasticated cord.
The cord is not secured to the frame. So there is nothing tying the internal frame (with camera and gyros) onto the outer frame or the airframe.

In a roll over this is a considerable weight to have unsecured.

It is an aspect of the design that is easy to overlook.

A few saftey straps are in order.

The fact that it is top heavy and that it has a small footprint should be seriously considered when preplanning rigging.
