I am trying to make the decision between a Red-One and the upcoming Scarlet. Money is only a minor consideration. This is for documentary, television production ONLY.

One of the most important things I need to know is this:

If everything involved with a particular shot is the same, which camera produces the BEST image when they are BOTH set for 3K? And, if the Scarlet is capable of shooting in 2K, then will it produce the same results as the Red-One in 2K?

Is the 3K sensor of the Scarlet the same EXACT size as the 3K portion of the Red-One?

I will be shooting everything in either 2K or 3K, NOT 4K, mainly because of the lenses we will be using, and what we'll be shooting with them.

*In other words; which camera produces the BEST results if everything is the same?

If this question has been asked a thousand times before, I'm sorry. I don't need to be beat over the head with it. I could not find it in this forum, so I'm asking.

Thanks for your help.

each of them has its own cons and pros other than image quality..
the 3K RED ONE will record with bigger pixels 5.4 microns compared to 3.2 microns for scarlet 3K.. thus RED ONE will use a larger area of the sensor.. producing better quality and more light gathering capable image..

Cairo, Egypt? Wow, that's really cool Mohammed.
Thanks for your help.
We hope to be in your country next year.
Take care.

Jim responded that there would be a slight advantage in noise and sensitivity for S35 over 2/3" Scarlet due to the larger sensor area and pixel size. Scarlet 2/3" will not have a 2k crop mode like S35. Scarlet models will have a 1080p RGB mode scaled from the full sensor 16:9 area for native HD video output. Red one does not offer this.
3k raw from 2/3" will be about the same image area as 2k from S35/RED1. If you want to use compact HD servo zooms or 16mm film camera lenses, 2/3" will be the better choice.

Are you saying that the sensor in a Red-One on 2K or 3K will NOT work for a 16mm or Super16 lens?

2k will work with 16mm and S16mm lenses, 3k will work with some S16 lenses from about 30mm up in focal length, depends on the lens. Won't work with most wide angle S16 lenses as the image circle is smaller than the 3k image circle which is about 19mm vs 14.6mm for S16.

I think the flexibility of the Red 1 you will enjoy. Sometimes you will want shallow DF for interviews, which is not as possible on a 2/3rds sensor, certainly not without being far away with the cam.

the other advantage is that the Red you can buy now. It's not even backordered

You're most welcomed..

you'll enjoy Egypt, you know you can take a tour around the Pyramids on camels ;-)

EDIT: now I think you won't enjoy that, while I knew that you're a wild life filmmaker.. :-(

Why in the world would I not enjoy that? I love the beauty, the culture, and the ancient ruins of Egypt. I can't wait.
