  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED + NVIDIA Announce Realtime 8K R3D GPU Decoding

any word on what the 2080 Ti cards will do for R3d?

From the first post in this thread from the big man himself.

When can I have it?

The target release is December 2018 to NLEs for incorporation

All NVIDIA GPUs running CUDA will see a significant improvement - this improvement increases the efficiency of CUDA-based processing of R3Ds

Which cards can achieve 8k @ 24fps? Do I have to buy the $10K version?

We have been able to achieve 8k @ 24fps on P6000 during testing - we are confident that the lowest end Turing will work well. Even 1080 Ti cards should see a massive improvement in performance.

How does this affect transcoding?

All transcoding requires decode of the R3D first, speeds will be greatly improved but the encode itself will take the same amount of time. Overall, the time required to export media will be significantly decreased, as the decoding/debayer has historically been the long pole.

How did you do this?? Does this mean RED is allowing GPU-based wavelet decode?

Yes, we have enabled the option to move entropy and wavelet decode to the GPU as well as debayer

Can you achieve real-time with effects layers as well?

We have full real-time decoding and color grading at 8K. We expect there to be headroom in the decode performance to allow for effects layers as well in real-time, depending on your system specs.

What about Resolve? ;-)

Any news on that front?

December 2018 is valid for its implementation in Resolve too?

Thanks!

My personal new found love for Resolve 15 definitely opened up that door :)

Glad to hear that! Resolve is a truly fantastic program when it comes to making art with videos. It works so well with red files. There are a few things I missed in Resolve from a Red perspective:

- an easier way to zoom into a clip at full 8k resolution to check focus, basically like you do in Redcine X. Right now you need to compare the clip resolution with the timeline in a calculator and the enter a zoom value in the Inspector. It works, but it is not very fast.
- Being able to export Markers from Redcine X. I still prefer putting markers in Redcine X.
- Being able to quickly change debayer resolution with a shortcut. Now you have to move into preferences every time.
- I cannot get near realtime with 8k clips on a 2k or 4k timeline even with 28 cores and 2 Titan X cards. It does not seem to even use the GPU or CPU much, they only use a few percentages. Our Epic media works in realtime but not 8k. Hopefully new SDK will help out. Right now I run in quarter res which is not ideal on a 4k timeline.

Super exciting to be able to edit faster on a laptop as well!
Exciting times!

Troll less. Smile more.

When you have other info, please share it... many Mac users are desperately waiting.

I Smile a lot, one of our system runs Linux, BSD, Windows and MacOS (and a lot faster than any Mac has ever done).
We don't suffer from the infamous out of memory error in Resolve and the incompatibility with MacOS, MacOS works flawless on CPU's and GPU's from a brand that starts with an A :smile5::thumbup1:

This is the best news I've heard all week!!!!!

Nvidia has been supporting Mac for the last year after years of no support as so many here, like us, are running 1080Ti's in their old Mac Pro towers show. It's well known on the street that Apple is going back to Nvidia in the new Mac Pro. Even if you thought Apple products were expensive before your about to be shocked.

The old mac's where pretty nice workstations which could be upgraded and still get support from a lot of hardware vendors and those vendors are to be praised for this. Apple on the other hand is doing the opposite for the last 5 years and is very succesfull in blocking their believers from other tech than Apple tech. Till today they are very succesfull in keeping their belivers in the Apple church, no matter how hard they say no to the believers.
It's also well known that no matter how hard Apple kicks their customers in the nuts, "the true believers" keep buying Apple products. What? are they raising the prices?

I buy Apple products though I am truly not a true believer. I would rather run a shitty version of Unix than the best version of Windows that Microsoft has ever produced. I would really rather run all the media apps, with all the media optimizations on Linux, but for now the iMac Pro is the best platform to support my media/creative ambitions. All this stuff about "believers" is something you attribute to other people, not an objective reality. It's annoying to be labeled in pejorative ways on a forum that should be above such things.

Not talking about people like you Michael, who uses the Mac for it's strength and things Macs do good or best(FCPX, ProResRAW, ProRes, having great looks, etc...), it's about people who buy and promote Macs for workflows they are not intendid for even if there are way better/cheaper/faster/etc.. alternatives.

Kind of buying a Monstro/Helium when you only do run in gun shootings and output at 1080 i59,94 for the local news network or youtube.

I run NVidia high end graphics cards in Mac Hackintosh units all the time without any issues or problems - both installed internally and in Thunderbolt eGFX boxes. This thread has shown me that it's time to sell my RRX card and start thinking about moving to one of these new RTX Quadro or 2080 cards instead. I'll be waiting for the first wave of Red users to post working reviews once they are retail delivered (very soon now), installed and put to the 4K - 8K tests.
