Red "not perfected" in daylight

Tenure

Tenure

The second worry is the workflow which now seems not to be a problem because one of my ex-students who I recommend buy the Red which he recieved in Sept. says workflow is a big myth.

And this is why most schools are teaching the history and not the cutting edge of Film Production. 1-Cost 2-Time 3-Profs have tenure... Most students know that they must do their own research on the RED vs. HVX200 as most film school profs are not into the technology. The profs would rather attend the UFVA conference and discuss social issues in film. There is also the idea that a good story does not depend on the format it is shot on...

Interesting differences between the guy and what was attributed to the guy. I also work and teach. And I think Jim would make an excellent teacher. There is much more to filmmaking than format or techhy details. Most of my students are more tech savvy and knowledgeable about the digital world than I am. Strangely this does not cause their images and sequences to look better or cut better or tell the story better????

I would argue that the reason most schools are teaching film history is because you must learn where we've been if you're going to figure out where we're going. The lessons of the masters are valuable regardless of what technology shows up. The properties of light and shadow, the nature of human color response, the photographic techniques of exposure, depth of field, and composition, the nature of visual storytelling and the use of visuals to elicit emotional response - none of these things change just because you're using a different camera. Film school is not trade school. Film school is, at its best, a more directed version of general education in which you are taught to think and are given input based on the greatest existing artistic works in order to help you to do so. If this is not understood, you either have never been to film school (a real film school), or you don't know why you (or anyone else) would attend one. If you just want to learn how to operate a camera, you want a trade school, not a film school. Someplace to learn the specific skills needed to fill a particular crew position. That is not the purpose of a true film school. In the best film schools, you emerge thinking like an artist, not a technician. There's a pretty significant difference between the two.

True 'dat, mmost! Which is why I'm at NYU- a fantastic institution that I've learned so much about being an artist.

Good point about seeing sequences cut together. I've seen bad, bad, bad directing on 35mm, 16mm, reversal, HVX, DV, and now RED while here. The beauty of RED shocks for the first few minutes of a screening, but a genius director and editor working together are a combination that continues to amaze through the film.

Speaking of which, it's time to get off Reduser and go storyboard.

I agree that you have to watch and analyze films to learn the craft of storytellling,
but to learn the tools of production you have to be here listening to the pros!

Learning to load an old Russian 35mm camera is a waste of time...
Learning on a decent Arnold & Richter is a bunch of fun & $$$...

Somewhere between DV, 35mm and R3D is a decent education,
but having time to hang out in the RedUser Forum is priceless.

Teachers teach because they can't make it in the real world

Teachers teach because they can't make it in the real world

This is pretty crazy... I think there are MANY DPs that would disagree. Starting with Peter Jackson, Steven Soderbergh, and a ton of others.

Teachers teach because they can't make it in the real world? (at least a few of them).

Sorry... this is just plain dumb.

Jim

Hey Jim,

I can't say I agree with you about the teacher bit. Most of my professors at NYU in film are working professionals - Michael Carmine especially.

I'm sorry to hear Ryan misquote Mike so terribly.

Perhaps someone who knows what they are talking about will make the restults of camera tests available online objectively comparing the latitude of the RedOne and other popular HD cameras and film stocks (i.e. Kodak 5219, 5217)?

If something like this is already around I would love to see a link -

Best regards,

Brandon
