I'm a student filmmaker shooting with a RED this weekend for the first time. My editor needs workflows for working with the RED files. He has a Dual Quad Intel Mac 2.8GHz, 12 GB DDR2 FB-DIMM, 1.6 Bus, FCP v6.0.6. We need specifics for shootin 4k and outputting to 1080p files.

The first thing to do would be to read the Whitepaper included with the RED FCP installer. That will get you on the right track.

Once you've gone over that, feel free to come back with any specific questions. Not trying to be an ass here, but without knowing a LOT more about your situation, it's basically impossible to give advice. And to be honest, the first advice is always to read the whitepaper.

Plus, shoot 4K HD (also called quad HD). And tell us about your equipment for post. And your shooting ratio. And your time frame.
There is more than one RED workflow…

Shooting 4k 2:1, equipment is listed in the first post. We need to be finished with the edit by next Tuesday. 3 min project with around a 6:1 shooting ratio. Considering how many post work flow options they are we were hoping to get a quick and simple process that you guys have found to work well in your experience.

Do you grade? In Color?
Why 2:1? 1920 x 1080 is 16:9 …

If your final result is Blu-ray, I'd convert it all to ProRes HQ with a first-light correction with the help of Clipfinder. Conversion times are not that huge for 18 minutes of footage.

FCP is very snappy with ProRes.

If there would ever be a film-out, you can re-conform with Clipfinder .

Devin,

Talk to Michael, he's the BEST you could hope for with your questions. Another great example of those that are on Reduser.

FCP

FCP

I'm experimenting with this also. Here's my thinking.

Render Small QT Files fo offline (Even DV 720x486 anamorphic) using clipfinder. Make sure they keep the proper names.

Conform using clipfinder to Proxies back to FCP

Send to color and back to FCP for finish.

I think color is the best grading tool by far with secondaries and vignetting once you get past the learning curve.

An alternate method would be to edit with -M proxies, and then send to color if you can stand the shabby quality. (remember to set your compressor in your sequence to REDCODE

It's pretty easy with just a bit of experimenting to use ClipFinder to render out off-line clips and then conform back and forth.

And then post back here what Michael recommended!!

Here's a link to the ONLINE FCP6 Red Workflow that I teach at the New York Film Academy. . . it's designed SPECIFICALLY for students. . .

Also, make sure you shoot 4k HD as opposed to 2:1. . . you'll have HEADACHES in Compressor/DVDSP if you shot 2:1
