.. but I still don't know if it will let us set up aperture manually, using the aperture ring when nikon lenses are fitted with one... I don't know either if AF is an option which can be disabled. Yes MUST be the obvious answer... I just would like to make sure..

I'm guessing Denis is talking about the new Nikon smart mount for the Epic.

Jacek OPTITEK INC is making one, it's approved & he will have stock in 3 weeks.

I'm pretty sure that will be a "dumb" mount - ie no autofocus/lens data. But will probably have ability to manually control iris of Nikon G-lenses.

Likely not made of Titanium either, but if it's like the Red One Nikon Pro-Lock one he makes, it'll be plenty solid.

It's fully functional with F, G, AIS, AI, DX lens series- i.e. all Nikon F mounted lenses unmodified, stainless steel dumb mount.

Red's new electronic "smart" mount for the EPIC allows for both manual and electronic control. It shouldn't be too far off as it was last said to be a couple months behind the Canon mount, which is now shipping.

I think Jarred said widely available in December.

NOT Stupid

Nikon Mount - Awaiting next revision. Still in Beta testing. Next batch November, full production in December.

So Jarred, can you tell us how iris is controlled on this version? There was mention of a dumb Nikon mount option by you or Jim a couple of months ago. Or is this the smart version with an iris motor that I assume would allow smooth programmed ramping.

This is the proper smart mount.

So not a lot of details, as expected, but definitely not dumb. Also, I don't get why you'd think a smart mount would not allow you to use the aperture ring on non-G's.

edit : Just realized OP meant might be a stupid question, not that the mount might be dumb. In that context, I think you're worrying too much. RED makes pro tools and I'm sure realizes that people often want to use manual controls if at all possible. The only thing I would not expect would be a smart mount that also has a linkage for manual control of G lenses, in addition to a motor moving the aperture control lever.

that's the answer I needed. Couldn't find it in red people's words, though.

The ONLY Nikon mount to use IMO at moment is Opti-Tek Mount....has a super attaching mechanism that is far superior to any others made...so you won't have to worry about a mid range zoom breaking the mount at the base and APERATURE control is thee on a ring for G lenses.....Love this piece of kit.

....that said, i'll be patiently awaiting the SMART/DUMB mount from RED.....if it is ONLY smart and no manual controls, then it's DOA for me...but if it truly has MANUAL control......along with lens data etc....and good LOCKING mechanism.....then SOLD....I would LOVE to see what RED has coming for this mount.....the CANNON mount has no appeal for me (not because of lenses) but no MANUAL control. \

....but Good news is RED is a FAST learner......as soon as they see a better way to make a widget they seem to stop the presses at any cost and just MAKE it. that's not something any of the big corps would do for us end users.

I don't want to have to spend a grand on a mount that I'm going to use for a few months. Don't get me wrong; I own the Optitek mount for my R1 and it's really a great mount. But the Optitek mount for the Epic is a dumb mount and sooner or later I'm going to need the Epic smart mount. RED, please get the mount ready sooner :)

you own Epic....shoot Epic, professional.....want to shoot Nikon lenses....to me, Sept, Oct., Nov, oh...December--MAYBE----umm.....what will you use on your EPIC. For me that's many $K's of lens rentals or loss however you look at it.

....sure, it stings, but what ya going to do....wait with baited breath for RED to drop a Nikon mount MAYBE in DEC??? odds are pretty good that it won't be ready in dec if we go by the red track record....which is NOT a knock by the way, but something of good observation these past 4 years.......these guys take on a LOT and tend to run behind.....So again, why would you wait if you plan to make $$ shooting ?

Because I can keep a thousand more dollars in my pocket by not having to buy two mounts. I understand what you're saying. I'm just whining... that's all ;) I don't like to spend money that I don't have to.

if only that was true in this biz.....i got a case full of shit i only used once for a job......worth pennies on dollar now. BUT, they did make me $$ at time, but sucks to have them---waiting for recycle pickup.

So true in this biz that time IS $$$$

Oh... So you want a physical ring to turn, like the Optitek mount, for controlling the iris on electronic lenses? Er... Don't think the RED mount will offer that. AFAIK, the RED Nikon mount is pretty much the same as their Canon mount. It allows for manual control in that you can manually operate your lens as if it were on any SLR camera, or make use of any electronic functions as well. But iris control on an electronic lens (G series with no manual iris ring), will be done via controls on the camera, not a physical ring on the mount. Should be able to assign it to the rocker dial on the side handle, control with REDMOTE and REDMOTE PRO...
