Hello,

I am shooting a student thesis film on the new RED MX at the end of Jan. I know that the new MX has little noise at higher isos. Being that this is a student project there is no money at the moment to do a official color grade, they are hoping to receive a grant to use for that purpose.

With that said if we just use the metadata information for now in post will there be a lot of noise at a 500 or 800iso?

THanks

MX is not just less noise, but prettier noise that looks more like film grain and has no ugly pattern in it.

We just snagged an MX and the difference right out of the gate is unbelievable.

Really, everything you do should be graded prior to final output, but the benefit to the MX is that you won't have to do anything special to de-noise the footage.

Even as a student with no budget, it is AMAZING what you can do with a simple S-curve on your contrast. A few years back, for my student thesis, taking a few hours to grade my shots with an S-curve on the contrast is what caused other students to come up to me and go "...how did you SHOOT that?!" Same way you did; using our nifty Panasonic DVX-100.

I just set aside a few hours at the end to grade. Only difference. BIG difference.

Nick,

I shot a junior film with the RED MX and at one point we were in a bar and I thought to get good light I thought why not ISO 4000. Even then I didnt see noise. So don't worry you'll be good. Plus just transcode from RED Cine with REDColor2 and REDlogFilm and then when you finish the picture lock just go to Color and you got it.

But then again I could be doing it wrong and I wouldn't know it. But this process so far has given good results.
