Thanks to my friend Steve Bumgardner at Yosemite, I had an opportunity over the last few days to film the annual "Firefall" spectacle at Yosemite National Park for my film "TimeScapes." During this brief period, the sun sets at such an angle in February as to backlight the waterfall at Horsetail Falls with very warm, direct sunlight from the distant horizon, making it appear almost like lava. http://www.michaelfrye.com/articles/horsetail.html

Tonight was my last night of filming it (weather is coming in), and I successfully pulled off a 2-minute, Z-axis, MX shot with my Duclos 80-200mm lens at 200mm on my camBLOCK moco system. I was very surprised that it worked so well. And somehow, I did not see ANY other movie cameras at Yosemite filming this!

I'll try to post some better pics when I get home and can get some framegrabs.

Beautiful! Hope to see some motion samples. I love Yosemite in the winter. Never had a chance to experience the Horsetail on fire.

Cheers,

Mike

Wow! You really timed it right, plus the weather and climate gods cooperated. Beats the old artificial Glacier Point firefall any day. The digital cinema evolution of Adams and Rowell. Congratulations.

Yosemite is an amazing place - I hope to go back in the not too distant future to shoot Vernal falls, Half Dome and El Capitan.

Beautiful, beautiful stuff, man!

For all that is good in the world, your talent and general awesomeness had better get seriously rewarded as soon as possible (although the career does seem to be doing well ;)

Like if you had so much money thrown at you that you could build a fleet of programmable hovering robotic pods with 5 Epics in them each and send them around the world photographing its wonders. That would do it.

But you probably like the whole "chilling next to your camera while it does its thing, appreciating nature's beauty" routine :)
