I am not a big user of the zebras or the false color, but repeatedly get exposure questions related to these tools.

Thus this test.

The purpose of this test was to use the in-camera zebra (the "video" false color would have the same effect), set the camera at the default settings (ISO 800/5600) and expose skintones in 5% steps from 100 to 5 and just have a quick look at what we came back with.

The zebras was set and the exposure adjusted until most of the face was just hitting the desired exposure.

DPXs and r3ds from the tests are downloadable.

Would be fun to hear if you think this is usefull, and what you think is "usefull range" based on this test...

Cheers!

You don't need to blog to convince us about adding REDlogFilm in camera.
It's already on the todo list :)

Also... all your metadata was set to REDcolor/REDgamma instead of REDcolor2 and REDgamma2.

It was set to redcolor/redgamma, as that was the available options...
Not all on Epics around here... :-)

Not really meant as a argument for RedLogFilm as such, even though I am all for that in-camera.

It's more of an experiment designed to make it easier for me to answer to the question asked...

The range was not narrower than expected... :-)

In General, though, I still hope for a better ISO/Gamma calibration, but I can well see the arguments for keeping it as it is.
Thus:
Confusion will be my epitaph...

Hmm, ta fella, going to give these a good proper look when I have time but damn there's a big range there.

One thing that jumped out- as a wee aside- is the moire in her top and how it disappears when graded.

The moire issue confused me a bit, too, but it may be due to how the RCX scales the jpg files (even though everything was set to "full" and "100%", while the graded examples (not the dpx's) are screengrabs from color...

Dunno...

Can't say so much about the test but what I know for sure that there is a very charming lady on the test images.

As to what is useable, I see a a lot of useable range in there for many applications... :-)

The woman is the head of the Norwegian Asosiation of Filmphotographers and is real cool.
